Replacement rim brake frameset

Hi all,

I sold my Ribble Sportive Bianco with a Campag group set and bought a steel frameset (Genesis Equilibrium) and built it up with a Shimano 105 group set.

Long story short, obviously, it’s heavy and with the type of riding I do (about an hour up some hills) currently, I’d have been better off keeping my old bike. I used to enjoy going out on my old bike and I can’t get excited about this one.

Anyway, I’ve sunk too much money in the components (pandemic prices) and the cheapest way out I can think of is replacing the frameset.

But it’s rim brake… and I’m struggling to find one.

Can anyone recommend a lightweight (perhaps aluminium) sportive / endurance style frameset?

Depends on your budget if you want new but given your previous bike...

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Condor might be worth a look.
  • Brand new, your options are limited as you are finding out as so few brands offer rim brake frames now. Trek do the Emonda alr. A couple of others like cannondale offer complete bikes. As Singleton highlights, Condor do a couple of alloy options.

Second hand alloy frames, you would have Cannondale CAAD, specialized allez, that kind of thing.

Have a look at Paul Milne cycles. They sell a fair few frames, mainly Ridley and Merckx in rim brake.

Ebay probably has some vendors with NOS rim brake stuff, unless you fancy going super high-end. IIRC Paul Milne cycles are OK, go direct to their website (prices lower than ebay).

It's just a hill. Get over it.

As above, Paul Milnes would be my first port of call. Have dealt with them a couple of times in the past and they are excellent to deal with. If you go direct to them rather than through their Ebay shop, they will probably offer you a bit of discount or throw in some extras like a BB etc.

Link below shows that range on offer which includes a fair few rim brake framesets.

Just as an example - this Ridley Helium in Large would be a nice option at £750 if the size is right for you.

How tall are you? There must be a lot of decent carbon rim brake frames on the market. I mean I like my Neil Pryde Bura SL but something like a Cannondale SuperSix would probably fit the bill as a lightweight race bike.

What's your budget? A parlee z-zero frameset just sold of £800 on ebay.

A time RXRS is on for £1500 (complete bike with SRAM Red 10 speed).

    There's a bike on there for £1,650 with 11sp dura ace di2

    There's so much out there.

Thanks so much for all the advice - really appreciate it.

I called Paul Milne cycling, who were great. They have a Ridley Helium SLA (aluminium) which might be a fair weight saving and could give me back what I’m missing. At £550, I think that’s pretty good value but I’m not sure what else is out there. It looks like all my stuff would move from the Genesis straight onto the frame (except the long drop brakes, but I already have replacements).

I had a Ribble Sportive carbon bike before the Genesis though, so I wonder if the Ridley would be as good as that?

I am usually a small frame for most manufacturers.

Any other suggestions that are worth looking at? Thanks again.

Make sure your new frame will take the tyre you want to use. I have a Ridley Helium rim brake . It will only take 25mm tyres max. If that is OK buy a carbon Helium .You will love it. That is a recommendation from a grandad!

Nothing against Paul Milnes and I feel bad for saying, but £550 is a ton of money to spend on a rim brake, aluminium frameset in today's market.

This is the bike I was going to buy, JUST for the groupset. I think it may even be in your size!
