Cleaning your chain in the winter

My chain was so dirty and clogged up I bit the bullit and removed it from the bike, soacked it in a bath of degreaser while using an old toothbrush to scrub it. After a couple of minutes I sprayed it down thoroughly with clean water, dried it, lubed it generously and then wiped the excess lube off with a cloth. It looks great now, but will I pay for it down the line ? I'm thinking maybe I should have used washing up liquid or some other kind of soap instead. Has anyone had a snapped chain caused by degreaser ?

Yes my snapped chain was caused by degreaser. Mainly due to not being able open the bottle and use it.

I once used degrease on some grease. The grease was totally ruined.

It's winter. Don't. Unless it's a muddy MTB. Just add some more lube every now and then. A quick run through of some baby wipes if you must. Thorough clean after the Ides Of March.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Yeah, just the edge. The back is full of holes.

    Usually just an old jizz-sock.

What is the censored? If it is your w@nk sock, you are over-sharing.

If you can't share on BR then where can you share?

(socks may or may not contain DNA. Subject to usual terms and conditions)

That's why they come in pairs. One for the chain and one for the other thing.

Newsflash - washing up liquid is also a degreaser, as is anything else containing a detergent. I think you're arguing against yourself there.

Degreasers break down oil or grease - they have no adverse effect on the metal underneath.
