Remember how much we all loved it when it was full of bots?

Jack Dorsey quits Bluesky board and urges users to stay on Elon Musk’s X
I get your points, but it's not as though anybody attacking Musk on X are censored, without Googling. I'd like to think the majority of sane voices will prevail. I guess the only concern would be the decent voices are put off by the extreme ones.

Musk could probably put him on the board if he wanted that. I really don't think Musk wanted to buy it, he agreed with Dorsey (who stood down) at the time that it was becoming too bias and not representing the average voice. He endorsed Musk initially too.
This is from memory without Googling, so I'm glad to be corrected.

Agreed, 'the majority of sane voices prevailing' would be good. I think Dorsey probably got it about right, and I'd be happy if he returned, as I think he's generally benign.

I'm still getting one or two nubile bots following me each day, every single one with remarkably similar profiles, and obviously fake, nearly all created in the second half of 2023. If the current management were interested in getting rid of them, it would be the simplest of jobs, but my impression is that the use of bots has actually been enhanced, as they've replaced the genuine engagement lost as a result of what Twitter has become.

That Guardian piece would fit in quite neatly with that thought.

Yes, I'm sure some people think it's perfectly reasonable to make direct threats of violence or refer to people as f***ing n*****s. It's the monetising and promotion of such opinions that is the problem.

FWIW, though I'm on both Bluesky and Threads, neither yet matches Twitter: as you say, Bluesky doesn't put in enough curveballs to challenge one's biases, and Threads doesn't have any sense of the 'breaking news' immediacy, not least as the 'for you' isn't ordered as 'newest first'.
There's a balance to be got between them not being unpleasant places and diversity of voices: the relative 'pleasantness' of Bluesky and Threads seems to be at the expense of diversity, but Musk's skewed diversity (allowing the promotion of hate, for example) takes it way too far, as it drowns out the diversity of the many sane voices... deliberately, I suspect.

Yeah, there has been quite an exodus of mainstream voices. I've had Blueblock on, which has blocked literally thousands of paid-for blue ticks, but I can understand why accounts with large followings neither want to continue driving traffic to Musk nor want to deal with the thousands of unreasonable intolerant trolls who have taken over the bulk of political discourse.

I'll be honest I haven't seen any tweets refer to f'ing n**** so that seems a bit of a straw man argument.
What I'm referring to is discussion of things like the role of an Israeli lobby in US and other countries politics, whether trans women are actually women, whether some immigrants have led to a big increase in sexual violence against women - stuff like that.

I don't think it's a strawman, you just see what you see on X but there are plenty of people on there posting that sort of stuff.

Your experience of Twitter does not represent what dangerous views it now tolerates and, I'd suggest, actually encourages, even if you ignore the disinformation pushed by malign actors.
Of course that was there before Musk, but it's exploded since, with all guardrails removed.

You can avoid most of it with careful choices of who you follow, but it's there.

FWIW, here's the first of today's pornbot followers... as usual, no posts, no banner image, 2nd half of 2023. I suspect that there are 10's of 1000's of these... there's no way they couldn't identify these en masse and delete them, if they wanted to. My assumption therefore is they don't want to, for whatever reason.

In some ways it's funny seeing what happens if you cross a billionaire with a 15 year old edge lord.
By the end hell have shat all over any legacy that he might have had though.
