Maybe there'll be some dancing about architecture afterwards: who wouldn't want to see that?RichN95. said:Never been. Probably never will. It seems to me like a musical festival where the bands and journalists talk about music. No-one wants that

I went a few years ago. I bagged an opening night ticket for not much money so it included free drinks all night.
Listened to talks by Wiggins, Mercxx, Cancellara etc. Met Cav, Cancellara and many others just wandering about - Stephens, Blythe, Millar, Smith etc. All the boutique brands are there to drool over and you come away with a decent haul of free stuff if your'e so inclined.
I'd say its a very decent day/evening out.2020/2021/2022 Metric Century Challenge Winner0 -
Well I just spent 10 minutes chatting to Boonen on my own so definitely worth it.

Did you place him at one of the big banks? Heβd fit it nicely with his liking of the marching powderrick_chasey said:Well I just spent 10 minutes chatting to Boonen on my own so definitely worth it.

I did have to really limber up to saying hello which is really not like me. Was properly starstruck to begin with.1

Your correspondent didn't find out too much.
On the question "regardless of the result, what was the day in which you had the best legs?" it was obviously Roubaix 2012 "honestly, I felt like I could have gone another 50km - even afterwards I didn't feel like I'd ridden a Roubaix". Chatted a bit about the thinking of the move. He saw I think it was Ballan and Pozzato messing about so the plan was to go with Nikki - when he saw Pozzato wasn't feeling it he gassed it and hadn't quite realised Nikki was already on the limit. Apparently Nikki was screaming at him to slow down haha.
Spoke quite a bit about Milan San Remo, and he was saying the cliche is right, there is so much luck involved. The only time it went to plan was 2006 when his teammate pozzato won. He was on Pettachi's wheel and Zabel led him out (he was quite animated explaining things), Zabel even peeled off on the side that suited Boonen but Pozzato was already there.
Was also saying that in 2012 the second best legs he had in a race was Flanders the week before his long solo. Was asking why then he left it to the sprint and we ended up in a long discussion about how the Paterberg doesn't suit him because of the sharp turn at the bottom which removes all momentum, and he's just a bit too heavy versus Pozzato etc to be able to attack on there Same reason he likes the Taaienberg - you come in with more speed and it's not steep from the off so he's hitting full stride just as it steepens and then he's got everyone in the gutter so he can hold it.
Anyway we then got into a discussion on how the finale of the parcours on a classic is so absolutely vital to how well it suits you (as per the previous discussion) and he's not a big fan of the modern Flanders route; partly because someone like him would have to be on one of his best days to win it because of his size.
Talked a bit about watching races and if he enjoys being a pundit. He does but prefers a longer form where he can nerd out.
Anyway, good chat. He's a good lad - obviously just likes talking about bike racing.7
