11 speed chainset with 10 speed chain

As the title says - will an 11-speed chainset work with a 10 speed chain? Need lower gears on the gravelicious thing, considering GRX sub-compact (which I could then use on other 11 speed (road) bikes for super hilly courses)

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Seem to recall I've done it in a pinch and it was fine.

You could also try running an 11 speed chain on the 10 speed bike, I've also done that successfully before.

The internal dimension of 10 and 11 speed chains are the same, so the retention on the teeth will be fine either way. Running the 10 speed chain on an 11 speed crankset, you might find chain rub occurs a gear sooner when cross chaining, as the 10 speed chain is slightly wider. In extreme cases you might get the chain catching on the shift pins when cross chaining in the small ring. This is going to be bike dependent, longer chainstays and\or narrower rear dropouts make it less likely because the chain angle is shallower.
