winter studded tyres for a mtb

Hi Can anyone advise me on winter studded tyres for my mtb. I commute to and from work on my mtb and with winter fast approaching i'd thought i'd look for some studded tyres. Has anyone used such tyres? do they work? what would you recommend?
Please i would appreciate any advice.
Thank you

Steve

  • I've had a pair of 700*38mm 45North Gravdal for ~5 years, they've been great in wintry weather.

With metal studs? I have some schwalbe studded tires, work well on sheet ice where you can't even stand up. Not great on tarmac, no help on snow really where the tires are enough to grip anyway.

Nothing except metal studs will grip on ice, but short of that, mud tyres work very well in snow, slurry and generally sh1t conditions.

Nope, there isn't a hard surface for them to grip to.

Not sure what kind of icy surface you intend riding on but just be aware of the following.
Smooth icy roads are rideable with spiked tyres whether on road or mtb as long as sufficient studs. Not all spiked tyres have sufficient studs.
Frozen slushy roads and paths are virtually un-rideable. Soft slushy roads and paths ok ish but not nice experience.
Fresh snow is nice to ride on till it freezes, then its like frozen slush. Personally I will use the car if its icy now.

    Thanks Oxoman.
I dont drive so i rely on my bike to commute to work (roughly 5 miles) the paths and some roads are untreated. ive had a few close shaves with ice and thick frost. im new to studded tyres so i don't know what to expect.
    Thanks and good advice.
