Help required!

I want to buy a steel MTB for commuting/light weekend trail riding and need some advice please. I've narrowed my selection to a Planet X Bootzipper, Kona's Unit X, a Genesis Longitude and a Surly Bridge Club. Currently the Genesis is topping the list purely due to the fact that it has a double chainring which gives the option of more 'flat' cruising gears. I've not bought a new MTB for a while so would appreciate any feedback from anybody who's experienced/currently owns any of the bikes listed. Thanks, Will.
