    Morning dweebs, chookta's and bampots.

Having to get a shifty on 'cos I have to catch friendly mechanic bloke before more work is chucked at him. He says 'the day always starts well and then I get all this sh*t chucked at me'.

    It's a beautiful autumnal morning.

Opened the curtains to rain this morning. No pedalling as I’ve just cleaned the bike.

No1 son upset this morning with his choice of high school totally out of the blue and upset with me for not immediately wanting to change to another.

No1 son getting some peer pressures applied SC?

Dry start, some blue and some light clouds plus bands of mist loitering across the valleys. Today will be more garage fettling, see if I can get all the basic wiring done, still need to get hold of a CU and light fittings.

Aftereffects of that gym sesh yesterday still hurting, see what happens if you take a month off.

Find a Screwfix near you. There's one this end. Amazing stock/prices. If you pop in, i'll show you where the kettle is.

Must be difficult for No1 son to throw that at you.

Smidge hungover myself after a some tremendous bottles at dinner last night, including a L-P Grand Siecle (old university chum going to be a father for the 1st time at age 49... :#:) ), and a 1989 Huet Cuvee Constance which was magical.

Busy digesting the Mini budget, may celebrate tonight by turning the central heating on :) Otherwise work busy with lots of people panicking about stuff that doesn't need panicking about.

This morning I sorted out all the dirty dishes in the office because the cleaner didn't show up and nobody else CBA. Then I realised why am I doing this, they treat us like poo here? Too late though.

Beautiful day here but overslept due to little sleep because of mutt next door so no ridey ridey today.

    Yeah I have noticed....

Although to be fair 2 of the kids in the office did clear up the almighty messes they somehow made in the kitchen this week (and they were spectacular) so maybe there is still hope.

  • Came home last night to find wife guarding the garage with the door jammed mainly open but at a very unusual angle. One of the cables has snapped. Brute force* / fence post / combined bodyweight of two people managed to get it to close and lock so it's at least secure. Repair kit ordered off 'tinternet. Spent much of the morning watching videos of people fixing garage doors (frequently with the back of a head in front of the camera at a vital moment) but I think I've seen enough. I may regret saying this publicly but it looks pretty simple....**

*I came off second best and twisted my knee, so I'm probably not going to be tempted to wrestle a bike out of the back door of the garage, through the garden then back through the house...

**If I'm back typing with one finger instead of two you'll know it didn't go to plan and I've amputated something with that effing big spring across the top of the door...

Cheers pinno and oxo. There's a Screwfix in Dumfries, not far away even if they don't offer a cuppa. Btw Screwfix is part of Kingfisher, the B&Q etc lot, and Toolstation is part of Travis Perkins group.

Got diverted into assessing practicalities of demolishing the very stupidly placed, entrance blocking outside cludgie structure, looks like it will be a straightforward take down, no load bearing on the walls. I think.

But did get all the internal double socket boxes mounted in garage plus got the ducting through the wall for the outside socket box.

Screwfix shopping basket continues to grow. Added an MK Sentry garage CU, has all the bits for breaker, ring main, lights and seems ok price. Plan is to do all the basics then get pro qualified sparky in to wire it all up to live, test and sign off.

Now then, ready for a cold beer, a hot bath and a chill time.

    Evening folks,
Busy day in the orifice with a slightly moist wobble in, dry coming home at least. No pub tonight as EPO feeling under the weather and saving herself for a heavy day tomorrow.
Careful with garage doors Munsford, mine nearly took my head off. Type with springs either side, the arm came away from the door and was stuck against the frame. Door opened, but one side was unsupported. I bent over to have a look and the arm came free smacking me on the head as it went. Lots of blood everywhere as it burst a small artery. If you want to be seen quickly in A&E on a busy Friday night walking in with blood running off your head, down the arm holding your brains in and dropping off your elbow is quite effective. Got side opening doors now.

I did this using ropes to pull the springs into position. Much easier than wrestling with them. Just a simple loop and reef knot. Make sure the other end is secure and doesn't ping off in the process.

**If I'm back typing with one finger instead of two you'll know it didn't go to plan and I've amputated something with that effing big spring across the top of the door...

Well I still have all my fingers but lost an entire Saturday

Startled when the parts arrived early on Saturday so I had little option but to give it a go. A small complicating factor I didn't mention earlier is that there's a 2 ton crate of hardcore about six inches inside the door and about 5 feet high, obscuring 40% of the left hand side. You need to access the top LH corner to take the tension off the spring and lock it so I had to do it sitting on top of the hardcore. Broken cable on the right, so mercifully accessible. Punched out the roll-pin securing the plastic cone, but no room to slide the cone off the shaft before hitting the brickwork. As per Youtube I then removed the mounting bolts and pulled the mech away from the frame until I could wriggle the cone free and slide on the replacement with its shiny new cable. New roll-pin an utter b@stard to get in. Eventually bludgeoned in with punch and lump hammer. Released the spring and tried the door; clearly not enough tension on the new cable :s Realised I must've installed the cone 180 degrees wrong :'(
No way in the world would I be able to drive the partially mashed roll-pin right out the other side. For a while I thought I'd have to destroy the cone and order another set, but then worked out if I wound the spring back even further I'd be looking at the other side of the cone and I could punch the pin out back the way it came. Worked a treat. Then had the further brainwave of reusing the original roll-pin to attach the cone in the correct orientation. 2000% easier than the first attempt with the presumably slightly oversize pin. Door now operating smoothly with tension on both cables. At which point I spotted that the LH cable was also conspicuously fraying in 2 places :o
Be stupid to risk it snapping, and all the advice tells you to replace both sides at once so decided to change that too. Despite being crouched on top of the hardcore, the cone and roll-pin malarkey completed without drama using the knowledge gleaned on the right hand side. Attaching the other end of the new cable to the guide roller however was a proper ordeal because of the aforementioned crate of rubble. Lying face down on top of it I could reach down into the gap but not manage to get the nipple into its keyhole. Decided to unbolt the guide roller from the door, fish it out, insert the cable, lower it back down and bolt it back on. Difficult, but managed all but the last bit. Effing bolts just not threading in. And then a rattling sound as the captive threaded thing they were meant to engage with broke free and fell out of the slot in the side of the door.

Cue much profanity. And then some more.

Spring still locked off, so now no option but to try lifting the door without the help of spring / cables. F@ck me, garage doors are heavy! With help of wifey and a couple of fence posts, managed to prop it far enough open to retrieve threaded fitting, bolt on the freshly cabled guide roller, then wrestle it back into its guide channel.

Safety clips out and spring released, one fully functioning, evenly tensioned garage door!

It's 6pm and we're both knackered. Brief moment of self congratulation, then hot baths, pizza and beer, and binge watching with a sofa each. ZZZZZZZZZZZZ
