Rear tyre in that video clip looks flat to me when any weight is put on it.

Agreed. At 7 seconds in, looks flat.
Explosive in rear tyre, remote detonation, obvs.

Lol... Is there a consensus it's a legit mechanical then.

    It’s a flat.
The only thing inflated was Adam Blythe’s opinion. (Again)

Not quite sure why he'd feign a puncture, did he think he'd get dropped from the group he was in?

Possibly or another split had formed... Bit in the moment stuff . He would not know what's going on up the road

Yeah I think so too looking at that ...not a devastating flat though ...looked fine as he put his arm up

I'm only suspicious he put his hand up at 2.5km - but there's no way he was stopping if he noticed it at 4km to go.

Maybe the real question is whether a rider should have to keep riding on a flat within 3km until they wreck the rim and actually crash. No way a rider is going to simply pull up with a perfectly working bike when they were only ever likely to lose 10-15s max and risk faking a puncture. Maybe he bailed too early but the outcome would have been the same, surely?

He did exactly the right thing. No way should he have ridden further with a puncture - if he'd found himself in the third or fourth group when he finally stopped, he'd have lost more time for no reason.

It's rather much ado about nothing. The 3 km rule is arbitrary and will result in some arbitrary weirdness from time to time. It was implemented to protect sprinters mainly and removing it wouldn't really make things better. I'm not fond of the rule, but I can't think of a better solution presently.

That being said, this finish probably shouldn't have had the 3 km rule, since a selection was bound to happen on the hill and thus the safety concern of GC riders mingling among the sprint trains isn't applicable here. The hill is selective enough for the sprint trains to no longer exist. Should be regarded as an uphill finish.
Great attack by Roglic. Remco got super lucky.

It doesn’t sound good. Jumbo are saying they’ll make a decision tomorrow if he continues

By having fewer riders present at time of the sprint. I'm not saying it works well or was a great measure. Just stating what the reasoning behind the UCI decision was at the time.
Prior to implementation of the rule, sprinter teams were complaining about GC contenders crowding space at time of the sprint.
