If you're intent on avoiding driving a car or taking the train then a scooter or motorbike would be the best bet given the distance you have to commute.

Not intent but it would be the ideal for both financial and environmental reasons. Just frustrating that one green option of the train prices itself out of the equation - a one day peak return is £31.30!

    Maybe thistle_ was right...
Could you cycle up to a station where the train fare would be less - much like we have travel zones in London? Considerations there would be the times bikes are allowed on the train - peak/off-peak. I'm also trying to balance the green/fimancial aspects and might consider the electric scooter but have an itch to buy a Harley!

45km is probably close to the max range for the electric Piaggio. It's also pretty slow for that length commute.
I would be wanting a bit of leeway on range to cover occasional road closures/diversions.

Yeah, it's annoyingly not quite enough in terms of speed and range. Potentially some other options out there - it's not something I'd even thought about until very recently.

One option on the range would be to charge in the office and then I'd have full juice for the way home. Or maybe a spare battery sat in the office/home - again not sure if that's even a thing with these e-mopeds.

Had the same thought but this is where the rail fares are utterly bonkers. I'm coming from Horsham (Sussex) to Whyteleafe, just inside the M25. An annual rail season ticket is £2776. Say I cycle further up the line to Crawley (about 30 mins on the bike) then jump on the train there - that would cost more (£2844)! The Horsham train actually stops at Crawley on the way.

Go another couple of stops further up the line (Gatwick Airport) and that's £2808!

If you really wanted to do bike+train then you can ride to Dorking and a season ticket is only £2016

    So today I did this.
    42km to work with 400m elevation @ 18mph.
    Worked from 8 till 3
    48km home with 400m elevation @ 19.5mph

    I'm toast.
Think I'll probably be falling asleep on the sofa once the kids are in bed hahah

No way I could do that 5 days a week

Not too dissimilar to mine (albeit quicker!) and yes I agree - it's not at all going to be possible!

    Plan B it is.

    Fair play to you.
