Tyres again.....

Ive been riding on Panaracer xc pros 2.1 for years but have decided to try something a bit more modern . Having read lots and lots and lots of reviews from the experts which mainly talk about speed im totaly confused !. Im not to interested in seting the fastest time on segments these days just getting out and enjoying a ride . To make it a bit more difficult im looking for 26" which is old school these days but then so am I .. So any idears for just general trail riding ?

high rollers are good but wear quicker and buzz more.

It depends on the surface you ride on.
Do you have problems with grip at the moment on any surfaces?

If you ride on tracks and lanes that are fairly packed or with just a bit of surface dirt then a tyre with smaller knobs might be better.
If you ride through deeper mud or loose sand then you should get something with bigger knobs which will dig in and give you grip in those conditions.
Something like a Nobby Nic or Rocket Ron might be a decent compromise:

If you have 2.1" now then you may be limited on width so check your frame clearance before ordering.
  • Thanks for the ideas . I ride in the Chilterns mainly so quite hard packed untill it rains then its sippery chalk. Its a newish frame so clearance shouldnt be a problem

In that case you want something XC biased and with a decent compound to work in (on!) that slimey chalk.

Schwalbe still do the Rocket Ron in 26x2.25 in Speedgrip compound* (trail compound as was) and that would be a good option IMO.

*The 3 compounds are Speed, Speedgrip and Soft. I preferred the older names as it was more intuitive.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • Thanks for the advice guys. Went for some Nobbly Nics in speedgrip from Merlin in the end. Been out on then a few time now and they seem a lot better than the Panas or could it be they just got some knobbly bits on them and not slick like the old ones . !!
