Tire Clearance - safe to go above manufacturer recommendations?
Hello,
I have a Merida CF 4 Frame from the Scultura 8000-e from 2018
From what I can see the manufacturer claims the 25mm tires are the widest I could go.
I'm currently using 25 c gatorskins tires on some fulcum racing 3's but will replace the tires soon through wear and tear likely for something faster rolling.
It appears that I have a bunch of room (photo below) is there any reason I could not run say a 28mm tire? Or is that too close.
Thanks in advance for any and all comments / suggestions,
Cheers,
Mike

If it physically fits then it works.
Allow a little clearance for crud the tyre may pick up though. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.1 -
I tend to allow 3mm clearance to the frame, for crud pick-up.
What's that current measurement? 4mm? And is it equal both sides (bikes aren't perfect)?Ben

Is that pic with the 25 tyres? Will be quite tight with 28, but might get away with it. Crud is more of a problem on tyre top I find, but you have plenty clearance there.
Also, tyres seldom measure what they say, depends on rim width too. I find that error is not consistent across the tyre sizes, even for the same tyre maker and style.1 -
Thanks guys, The measurement is about 5... just checking the other side, it looks to be similar.
I think I'm gonna go with the GP5000 in 25 - by some accounts online they measure a little bigger - I recon its gonna be too risky to get the 28's...
25 feels like how 23's were a few years ago - I guess I'll just wait till my next bike to experiment.
Cheers,
Mike

Space under the brake bridge may be a constraint as well as the chainstays.1

Gp5000s tend to be a bit wider than spec by my experience, 23s being ~24mm and 25s being ~26mm. However, the 32s began life slightly small at ~31mm, but are now ~32mm after a year.
I'd expect the 28s to be ~29mm.
The brand new Vittoria Corsa N.exts are apparently true to size.================

You will probably get 28s on there okay, but be wary of wheel flex if it looks very tight.
Either way it won't make you go any faster.0 -
Interesting, I have read, and experienced the opposite, though that will be on Mavic 125th anniversary wheels, which will be old school narrow internal width.N0bodyOfTheGoat said:Gp5000s tend to be a bit wider than spec by my experience, 23s being ~24mm and 25s being ~26mm. I specifically went for the 25mm GP5000s on my CR1 SL, as clearance is so tight.
I measured them up with callipers at 24mm.
I still popped a bit of frame protection around the area on the frame where they could rub.Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

I'm enjoying the idea of making a tight space tighter. 😉daniel_b said:

Gp5000s are narrower than the gp4000s they replaced, but on more modern rims still size up wider than the label says.0

I'd stick with 25mm. A snapped spoke or impact damage (rim) could leave you with the tyre rubbing on the frame. As above, crud can be annoying in winter.1

Forgot to write on my earlier post, this is three sizes of GP5000s on 17mm rim (for 32mm tyre) and 19mm rim for the smaller sizes.================
