First Mountain Bike

Hi, I have been road cycling for many years but thinking of getting a Mountain Bike for the lanes and paths that aren't suitable for a road bike.
I am looking at the Cube Analog Hardtail Bike (2022) from wiggle an comment or suggests would be grateful.

Not sure if it is relevant but I am 70 and cycle between 150 to 200 miles a week.

Thanks

    Hi baroid,
I am mid 50's, I've been road cycling for many years and bought my first mountain bike about a year ago - happy to share my experiences.
First off, the cube looks like a nice bike for what you describe.

MTBs are likely to be more XC oriented - shorter wheelbase, steeper angles and faster/easier when it's not too challenging - or more trail oriented - longer wheelbase, slacker angles and a maybe a bit slower on flats and uphills, but the geometry gives more confidence when descending on trickier terrain.

I was in a similar position and bought a modern trail geometry bike and after a while I switched the really knobbly tyres for something a bit smoother and faster.
Something like the Whyte 603 would be more of a trail bike in your budget if you want to take a look for comparison.

If you are looking more at light offroading rather than full on MTB fully rigid is an option. I've got a rigid MTB with plus size tyres which suits what I use it for - the only thing I'd change is it's a steel frame which is unnecessarily weighty.

I think it largely depends on what you really think you will want to ride.... just a bit of canal path, fireroad etc... perhaps a gravel bike would suit better. Something a bit more ambitious , and perhaps starting to push your ambition and skills?
I was exclusively a roadie for a long tie but a few years ago I decided to resurrect my old, steel rigid mtb that was moldering away in a corner of the garage (previously just used for family, child type rides). I gave it a bit of a service and all worked well.
Went over to some off road places then went to a trail centre and did some easy trails.... loved it. Bought a full suss mtb..

It really depends on what you want to do.

Certainly in the past, a common suggestion would be the Voodoo Bizango.

But if you can stretch your budget a bit, you may well find that if you browse the PlanetX website on your mobile, it will offer you a 10% discount off your first purchase down the bottome of the page. If that can be applied to the On One Whippet on promo at £899, winner winner chicken dinner!
