Shimano LX shifters

Hi. When I shift using the larger paddle to go down a gear or into a larger cog on the rear wheel, the shifters don't catch onto a the ratchet for about 50% of the time. You just keep thumbing it until it finally engages. Shifting using the smaller lever to change into a smaller rear cog springs back every time. Same on both levers. Can you fix this?

    The only useful bicycle application of wd40 is to spray the hell out of the inside of old shifters.
    If your unlucky and the old grease in there doesn’t clear consider stripping the shifter and clean the mechanism with a brush and more wd40.
