Tour de Yorkshire to be replaced with new-look event in the region from 2024
The Tour de Yorkshire will not return in its previous form after a breakdown in negotiations, but plans have been announced to launch a new-look event.

Talks between Silicon Dales, which bought the rights to the race after the collapse of Welcome To Yorkshire, and Tour de France owner the Amaury Sports Organisation failed to find an agreement for the return of the event which last ran in 2019.

But an agreement in principle has now been reached with SweetSpot, organisers of the Tour of Britain and Women’s Tour, to deliver a new race in time for the 10-year anniversary of the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in the region.

As a cyclist in Yorkshire I should be excited by this, but my only emotion is "meh". It's probably the involvement of sweetspot. Their races always look a bit naff to me.

Yeah, I see it coming back in a new, much lower profile form before disappearing altogether.

    I'm gutted it didn't survive.

Honestly, the village my in-laws are from was never so excited in the 15 years I've been going as they were when the TdY came through the village.

They set up a big screen, set up a village fete, decorated the street, all for one pass.

It was the same all over - they all loved it. Crowds were always good, the associated TdY sportive which I did was always well attended with big crowds too.

It was actually a better race than the Tour of Britain.

For all the criticism ASO that get, they know how to put on a bike race......
TdY was a fabulous event, that hit the mark on all counts; a good mix of stages, excellent live TV, large crowds, and women's event, etc

Somebody has already mentioned it, but Sweetspot events can look a bit 'budget'.....

Budget is probably the issue though...

Sweetspot do the Women's Tour don't they? If so their graphics information on the live coverage was appalling and should be the sort of thing they can get right with the budget available. The ToB coverage has been a bit better in recent years and the event itself seems pretty well organised.

The ToY did a great job building on the positivity of the TdF visiting Yorkshire and attracted a strong field. I suspect the new version will end up with a mainly Continental teams plus a few Continental Pro at best.

Sadly, I don’t think ASO were interested once Verity was out of the picture.

I also have some real doubts about this Silicon Dales guy too. Their accounts don’t show a lot of activity. He’s been vocal about trying something new. I also see At Companies house he paid way more than others bids for the rump of welcome to Yorkshire. Smells of nexthash, Aqua blue, womens tour of Scotland, etc to me.

He claims the 2023 TOY was underwritten by businesses and ASO didn’t listen. Maybe ASO did a bit of due diligence.

    I’m possibly wrong.
