Shipping from Germany to UK

Hi, sure not the first to ask but can't get a clear enough answer:
I've paid a courier firm a decent wedge to ship my eMTB back home to the UK having lived in Germany for some time. It was bought in 2020, so is not new.
Everything I can find seems to suggest even though I paid VAT at the point of sale here in Germany before the end of the transition period, I'll be charged both VAT and import duty when it arrives in the UK and no small amount either, based on the cost of the bike.
I have to apply for a ToR1 relief from as I'm relocating.
The reason I have doubt is because the courier firm are telling me VAT etc is only applied to new purchases, but I can't find anything to support that and don't want to get hit with a hefty bill once it's been shipped.
I can't fly it because of the battery.
I'd take a ferry/train, but that doesn't seem to negate the tax liability?
Am I missing something? Or am I on point?
