You do not say where you are located and any preference on retailer, but for the price point, type of riding and frame size you will need (XL), then a 29er hardtail is the most likely choice.
Does the budget also need to stretch to things like helmet, gloves, pump etc?.
a quick Halfords search has Voodoo and Boardman options (https://www.halfords.com/bikes/mountain-bikes/?prefn1=gender&prefv1=Mens&prefn2=suspension&prefv2=Front Suspension&prefn3=type&prefv3=Mountain Bikes&pmin=749.00&pmax=1000.00), and it is also worth looking at Go Outdoors.
Try and at least sit on any suitable bikes to see how they feel and which you prefer.
Also if you make your mind up, look for TopCashback, vouchers and offers to get a deal.

I'd go second hand at that price point... in fact I did, and it's up for sale

I would include all the extras listed for the price (as my new bike's arrived now...), so pedals/dropper/nearly-new tyres... all ready to go.
Must get around to amending the advert!0 -
