Converting Triathlon Bike to Road Bike...

Hi,

I recently purchased a Triathlon bike with every intention of using it for competitions, but as a result of injury I can cycle but not run, so wont be competing any time soon.

I am therefore considering converting my Tri-bike into a road bike so I can get more use out of it on the roads.

Has anyone got any experience and/or advice they can offer?

Thanks

Just start calling it your road bike.

Does it have drop bars or TT stylee bars?

Swap the bars out and remove the bottle holder from behind your ass.......
and buy and wear some socks.
  • I bought a Dolan Scala frame on Facebook marketplace and used this to build a full mechanical ultegra drop handle bar bike.

It rides well but can be a little twitchy.

  • Hi @MattFalle , I have TT style bars... I don't know if I'm wrongly assuming it is a simply case of swapping the TT bars for Road bike handlebars

  • hi @langtounboy, thanks for the picture. When you say twitchy I assume you mean through the corners?

It is my only concern other than the drops being a little low.
  • Hi @corporate.lift1 I think it's twitchy in the corners because the frame was a little small for me & i had to use a longer stem to get the reach.

It's reasonably simple, bars, shifters, stem. The hardest part is the internal re-cabling.

Swapping TT type bars for conventional drops is the easy bit. Recabling everything can be a faff. What kind of shifters and brakes does it have?

    Ciao

Yeah - old bars off, new 'bars and shifters on, re cable, ride.

Set all up to suit you.

You'll get used to the change in handling in twenty miles.

In the loveliest possible way, its just a bicycle, so I really wouldn't overthink it.

And a top with sleeves unless you've got massive guns to show off.

It’s what I had to do to make it fit me.
Or if you mean the cabling that’s where they go into the frame.

I think it's more likely a comment on the positioning of the shifters (too low) and the rotation of the bars (tips need to go downward) for the ergonomics of modern bars and shifters.

That and possibly commenting on the remaining steerer above the stem.

More likely that spacers are involved at all.
Never mind though as it's not me or him riding it. 😉

No point if people don't listen.
Less point if they already have it. I'd still advise against buying new.

    Exactly M.E. - grazie.

    All of the above.

It all needs sorting as its a bit chip shop at the mo'.

    Agree.

If you can get it for free then fine, but buy it new? Really? Nah.

  • @MattFalle thanks for the insight much appreciated.

@Munsford0 I've actually got the ultegra di2 (11-speed) components. so other than routing the brake cables through the integrated bar (which is already the case). I'll be removing the shifter cables entirely... so this wont be a problem.

From what I am reading a bike fit will be necessary to get the seat position, stem, handlebar and shifter positions right. Which I was planning on doing anyway :)

I’m doing the same with an immaculate old Specialized Transition frame I picked up off eBay for less than a ton.
    I’ll let you know.
