Help With Replacement Chainset Recommendations

While out on a ride this morning the drive-side crank separated from everything else and launched me over the handlebars. Currently, or previously, I have an Ultegra 6800 Di2 groupset which now needs a new chainset.

Although I can get a replacement R-8000 172.5/50:34 chainset, should I consider anything else?

Thanks in advance

Anything else that you like the look of and fits your budget

Bear in mind potential bottom bracket changes you may need.

There seems to be a recurring issue with Shimano chainsets separating like this - but I'm not sure if Shimano has ever acknowledged the issue.

In any case, the chainset is just a lump of metal that moves the chain around. Lots of choice out there, depending on budget and aesthetics..

I've only ever heard this issue for the 6800 series. To the OP, I would probably look into a 5800 or 7000/8000 replacement

I've seen it often enough to conclude that it is a design flaw.
Even if you could get a warranty replacement I'd want a different model.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

    I second Ugo's answer.

105 R7000 or 105 5800 would be a straight swap and also the cheapest option I'm aware of (the older 105 5800 seems to be harder to find in stock though). I've not read or seen pictures of the issue effecting 105.

Yup - thats what happened yo loafs.

Tbh, Shimano cranks are a bit meh - not particularly good looking, not particularly stiff......

Loads and loads of choices out there: no real reason to go Shimano tbh.

  • I recently swapped-out my Shimano cranksets for Rotor Aldhu's. Not specifically because of the issues above, but coz wanted to try Q-Rings and I like the design. Build quality is excellent and they certainly feel more substantial than the Shimano Ultegra.

I'd also recommend Rotor, whether you want q rings or not. You may also want to consider Praxis. The Zayante carbon is a nice bit of kit but you will need a new BB.
