    I once sat on a safety committee where someone did require treatment following this injury at a staff celebration event . Decision was to request a senior staff member should be present when corks popped.

    At least when he withdraws he'll be able to blame it on feeling sore from the crash rather than having to blame a "Twisted Tonsil" (My thanks to Robbie McEwen for that turn of phrase 😎)

    I don't think his position had anything to do with it, it was just one of those incidents when you are at your absolute limit and make a momentary error in judgement. I think the fact that he was there and contending for the win was pretty exceptional, none of the other pure sprinters were anywhere to be seen.

    I think even he should have been able to see the bike in front.

    "Should have been able" certainly, but maybe he was just so on the limit maxed out HR that he really didn't see anything anymore let alone make a decision. He needed to have moved left if passing was ever supposed to be an option, but MvdP came past there a second or two before. Girmay was maybe tiring just at that moment, Ewan had 1-2 more pedal strokes in him and just clipped the wheel.
    Makes him look really silly, but I feel sorry for him. Was just a mistake anyone could make when maxed out to that level.
