Have you tried requesting a second device for work, so you can leave one at home and one at the office? 2.5kg saving right there factoring in power and peripheral devices.

I have indeed, but they are one of those workplaces that are strongly resistant to anyone having more than one device :#

The other complication is that I have the option to visit 2 offices in total, and I can't see them ever agreeing to me having 3 devices, so I'd still need the pannier option for office number 2.

    Annoying, but there we go.

Still can't see why a carradice bag with SQR aka quick release wouldn't do everything you wanted and more, unless to have a carbon seatstem or D shaped one.

    It's a D shaped seatpost called Duncan.

As the bike is now due in about 5 weeks, I thought I should get on this really.

Took another look at the ortlieb, and was pondering the possibility of mounting the little 'pegs' onto the inside of the rear stays, ie through the fittings that the mudguards would take, but I have a feeling that won't work very well.

Also, searching UK sites, most have either removed the page that used to list it, or simply says it is not available, so I guess either Ortlieb had an issue with it, or they are just not able to supply the volume, no idea which.

I did see they have rear stay mounts, but I don't really fancy putting that onto carbon stays, so reluctantly I think I will have to go for the alloy tailfin.

That over the carbon, as it's a decent chunk 'cheaper' and also it has bottle cage/generic mounts on each side, so gives a few other options for extra fluid or luggage etc etc.

I got hold of one in the UK recently without issue.

The pegs are designed to go on the mudguard pegs so sounds like it will work well.

I expect on your bike they will work a treat, but thinking about my bike with the mounts on the inside of the stays, assuming I could indeed bend it narrow enough to fit in there, it would be trying to push the stays outwards, not the end of the world I guess.

The top bar would be fine to hang the ortlieb pannier off, but the hook at the bottom of the pannier, although adjustable would not be able to reach the rack legs, as they would be the other side of the rear stays - I guess I could bodge something with a bungee or similar, but then you run the risk of something snapping, getting stuck in the spokes and sending you straight to A&E.

I've been soldiering in on the boardman hybrid this week - it's not 'too' bad on the way in, though the hands start to ache a bit on the way back.
I think if I fitted some more padded grips plus bar ends (Maybe one of those all in one units) it would be a lot more viable, but I don't know - it's probably not worth it for a few rides, although I'm half thinking that in the depths of winter it might be the better bike to take, good to have the option at least, and know it is not as terrible as I thought it might be. Time taken is near identical on the way in, as I am able to cut out a steepish hill by going offroad, on the way back it's a bit longer, as it seems more uphill, and the weighty bike with marathon plus tyres is a drag up the hills, although good training I guess.

I half considered fitting some tri bars I already have, and did in fact buy for it, that are currently on my turbo bike, but due to the terrain they would only really be of much use in the morning, the return journey with more uphill, and a ton more traffic doesn't really make it viable/safe.

ah, you mean the mudguard mounts halfway up the rear stay? Yeah, I don't think it would work on them. Buy the Tailfin.
