When I brake it feels gritty - rather than the normal smooth action from full release to full 'on'. I have stripped down and confirmed it is the actual brake caliper rather than the lever/cable. With the brake (rear) off the bike, when I actuate the brake slowly with my hand/fingers, I can feel the point where it goes
to a gritty feel. I have taken the brake apart and 'semi' cleaned it and reassembled with oil/grease but it is the same. There is a bare metal section, see attached image, where the roller makes contact with part of the body - I don't know whether this is normal or the cause of my trouble. Is this an issue that happens with 105 (5800) brakes and is this a case of a new brake?

Hard to tell anything from that photo TBH. If you have stripped it down completely and got everything scrupulously clean but when reassembled it's still misbehaving it suggests you need a new caliper.0
