and that is the whole point forumites.

the local clubs, doing what they did, getting the road closed not only means you and me can't pootle up by ourselves but the cycle bashers now have a shed load more ammo to use against new proposed cycling beneficial schemes.

for the sake of pretending to be JV they've stuffed years of behind the scenes meetings, banging heads against walls, etc

worst thing is? they should know better.

Biggest issue with this, is that the local DT rag is sensationalising it as usual and cyclist bashers are jumping on the band wagon. What they don't report is that local residents, farmers and emergency services are still able to use it. Personally think its pathetic. I mean mam tor road at castleton was closed many years ago but cyclists still use it walkers walk on it oh and the local council use it for tourist parking.

Isn't the issue that said locals and farmers actually need to use it, and might encounter a peloton reenacting the stage into Gap?

You really have no idea do you. I don't know what it's like down your way but up here the vast majority of road cyclists you see are not club groups and rarely in matching clothing if they are.

I strongly suspect the problem is much less the small number of people using it, matching clothes or not. It's the fact it made national news whilst people were bragging about how great it was.

You'd struggle to keep a group together on that road anyway, either way starts with a long climb which would splinter all but the most evenly matched riders.

And given they've also closed it to walkers what's the excuse there ? It's farcical - you have a right to walk on roads - if you do any walking you'll know sometimes it's necessary - you probably wouldn't on Snake Pass normally but the one time it might be safe they ban it.

Yeah bikes aren't motor vehicles. They're light on the infrastructure. Cars are still allowed down, as are emergency vehicles.

If the issue is some cyclist traffic gets in the way of emergency vehicles then that argument should apply to all traffic regardless - that isn't really a good reason to stop cyclists using it, not least as cyclists are more than capable of moving to one side - something a big car bus or lorry would struggle with.

It's just jealousy and anti-cyclist behaviour which is common and a vote winner.

For those who like this sort of thing there is a mass trespass being organised for Saturday 12th March 2:00pm for walkers, runners and cyclists.
MF it’s your dream ride you could wear your club top. B)

Nope I'm moaning that as usual the DT is using it as a cyclist bashing exercise again. I reckon their editor is a lycra hating numpty,
Now, is the editor or a local free newspaper a numpty.... I wonder....

You rarely get groups of 20 up here and the only ones I've ridden in that large have not been club rides.

Sure you get chain gangs that big or used to do - zwift has cut numbers significantly and Summer the group's were usually smaller.

In any case so what - as a motorist I can count the number of times I've been held up by a big group of cyclists on my fingers - people need to chill out and realise other people's interests might inconvenience them in some minor way without taking it personally. .

You need to read some of the posts above.
  • I'm pretty sure from a legal perspective the local authority has a responsbility to demonstrate that they are enforcing the closure to

Snake Pass is approx 30 minutes ride from my mum's house and I have ridden it loads of times, usually from Glossop.

Never had an issue with cars, for an A road linking two major cities it is far quieter than you might expect. You certainly get much worse traffic (and attitudes) on fairly minor roads down south.

Can't help thinking there would be no issue were it not for all the twonks posting online that it's a cyclists paradise (probably more so than those actually using it)

It's quieter than you think because there's a weight limit on it anyway preventing heavy goods vehicles from using it. That's also why Woodhead is such an absolutely horrible stretch of road for cyclists.

There has been a similar landslip on Long Hill out of Whalley towards Buxton which has meant temporary lights have been there for the last two years! They have only very recently started a repair on this.
The issues on Snake appear to be worse than that and likely won't be a quick fix. There's been so much movement in that same stretch for decades. I suspect the closure and/or single lanes will be there for a very long time.

Odd that mam tor has always been open. Cycled the A57 enough times. The 628 is the dangerous on for me. Glossop to Woodhead to Langsett. But a fantastic descent the opp way.

Talking of how long it takes Derbyshire to reopen roads after a landslip - I believe the one near Eyam is now closed to vehicles permanently and the one near Lea Bridge has been closed for over two years - apparently work is starting on that one soon though.
