Heartbroken...frame broken

My 1986 531 steelie frame just broke. Gear hanger snapped.
I think it's terminal, uneconomical to fix.
I could cry.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Argos say £50 for a braze on hanger which doesn't seem too bad if you like the bike.
Might be other places that can do it quicker/cheaper and nearer to wherever you are.
  • There are a few things you can do...
the obvious one is a single speed conversion, since you have horizontal dropouts.
The other is to use one of those hangers that clamp to the quick release, much like they did back in the days... see what I mean?

Don't be ridiculous. It's a brazed dropout, easily replaceable by any competent frame builder (such as Argos, as above).

It's only ridiculous if you know what's repairable and what's not. One of the great things about steel frames is they are repairable more easily than aluminium or titanium.

Replacing the dropout will wreck the paint around the dropout, so there's extra cost for that. Anything from a couple of tins of hammerite (primer & top) and some elbow grease up to to £200 for a full respray.

I see opportunity - single speed (w/ magic gearing) then n+1

Tempting, but I have neither need nor room for another bike (this was my turbo bike)

Full respray £200??? Done properly you'll likely to be out 3 times that.

Argos say "Frame and forks in plain or metallic enamel £225.", and they aren't the cheapest of places.

But, yes, if you want a fancy paint job, you can pay a lot

It's red. How hard is repainting that part of the frame going to be?

paint the drop outs on both sides in black, no need to colour match then.

The brazing will discolour the paint on the stays, regardless of what colour the dropouts are painted. At least a partial repaint will be needed...

Probably best to paint the repair after its done.

Not very, a big rattle can of primer, colour and gloss and the whole frame is done.

They also make red electrical tape.

I think the OP is over analysing this.
