Chain prep for waxing question

Hi. I need methylated spirits for the second part of prepping the chain prior to waxing.

1) is the dyed purple one ok? It’s much easier and cheaper to get hold of in UK, I appreciate that I won’t be able to see the crap come off it as effectively with the purple one.

2) if so, will it it discolour the chain at all, as it’s a dye?

3) the gold chains, will solvent strip the gold plating?

Thanks in advance

Rod

I use plan petrol in a plastic lidded tub. Chuck it in swill it round change petrol and repeat. Give the chain a good whirl to get rid of excess and dry. Sorted.

Also, solvent will not strip electroplating. If it did, there would be a lot of gold chains reduced to bare metal, as the majority of regular chain lubes contain some form of solvent as a carrier.
  • Thanks guys.

You can get 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on Amazon and it's perfectly clear. Worked well for me.

I've not waxed a chain but I've used the same process (white spirits followed by alcohol) to clean a chain before and it worked well.
  • 1) Yes the purple stuff is fine
    2) No it will not discolour the chain
    3) No it won’t strip the plating

A couple of times in fresh petrol each time is a good idea as it needs to be absolutely clean inside and out. You can't see inside so no harm is done by making sure. You'll be glad you did ;)
