Eventually got round to getting flat pedals put on my crank. Bike shop guy was very amused. Have now superglued some heavy duty velcro to them and my runners respectively, and I'm not unhappy with the result, comfy feet, minimal slippage and feel less like a ballerina.

Am getting faster at my 40k rides. Best on the static is 62.5 minutes and on the road is 68. Goal is to regularly cycle 40k in an hour.

Weight continues to drop, now fluctuating around 77-78. Not going to change my diet. I'm enjoying the journey and I'll just see what this fitness lark organically serves up (boom boom!) and take it from there. I love you custard square, you are my soul animal, if custard squares were an animal.

As I get fitter I seem to be shedding the grumpy old man persona and am starting to like, or at least tolerate, other people again, but I doubt this will last. A lot to be said for the effects of exercise on mental health.

Am upset I can't fit 30 mm tyres on the caad9. And have been regularly looking at bike porn on the net. Aero bikes are the Annie Sprinkle of cycling. And I really want to have a go on (in?) a velodrome. Am beginning to understand the importance of Watts.

Do you think a goal of 45-50 k in under an hour is unrealistic? Is this something enthusiastic rider's achieve regularly?

OK. I'll just focus on 40 in 60 for the minute.

That would still be a heck of an effort. I've done 38 on an outdoor velodrome with a prevailing northerly along the back straight.

    Felt a bit unwell afterwards...

  • I'm doing 38ish on the static in the morning before eating, only a couple of coffees. I feel foul about two thirds through if I eat anything beforehand.

40K in 68 minutes on flat pedals and womens saddle. Sounds like Cargobike.

I think it's more like that video on the YouTube of the priest racing down the hill on his old three speed.

nah - he has glued velcro onto his pedals and shoes so he must know what he is doing.
