Computer mount... bare metal

I bought a new computer mount for my gps, but the new mount has no rubber pad, so when clamped to the bar it is metal on metal. I'm worried this will not be a snug fit and will slip around, plus scratch my bar. I can get a piece of old inner tube or sommat to put in between, but it seems a bit heath robinson for a brand new mount!

    Electrical tape.

Most mounts don't have rubber pads any more, it's not going to be a problem.

Personally I would get a narrow strip of inner tube, electrical tape over the top, and then secure it over that - no way would I put a metal clamp straight onto a carbon bar, or an alluminium one for that matter - just my personal take.

Presumably you have a metal stem clamping the bar with nothing in between? And your brake levers etc?

Its more about where on the bar, I'd have thought.

Personally I don't see an issue though. Bit paranoid I agree.

It'll be designed as virtually interference fit, so you might get a wrap or two of tape but you won't get a rubber shim in there.
  • I don't see a big problem here. I had something similar (if I understood you correctly). My fasteners turned out to be a little defective (consisted of two metal parts), and when I was driving over rough terrain, they constantly made ringing sounds. This annoyed me a lot. I used double sided tape and a piece of rubber from the inner tube. But, it will not bring any harm, except for annoying sounds. So if it doesn't matter much to you, then don't worry and leave it as it is now.

I'd use tape or a rubber shim - unless the mount is made specifically for that stem the deformation of the rubber might help the fit.

I agree metal on metal does sound odd if it's as I'm imagining it. The comparison with shifters and bar clamps wouldn't reassure me as both can mark the bars.

What make of mount is it? Most are very hard plastic. Not heard of a metal one. Are you ever likely to ride with the mount removed? If you don't then you won't see any mark which may or may not be there. As above - two wraps of electrical tape at the most will suffice.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

    Single wrap of helicopter tape.
