Hunt 52 Carbon Aero RB

Think I'll pick up a set of these for my new bike. Anyone have any issues with them? Also will I see a huge difference in paying 400 for Ceramic hubs?

Cheers.

    Oh god, that good?

I'm open to suggestions, in that sort of budget range.

I had some built by Spokesman.

Very happy with the service, comms and wheelset.

Little bit more than these, but I went superlight.

They are fine. Don't bother with ceramic bearings on these or other wheels, unless there's no option.

Alternatives, many. Winspace do two levels of wheels. The luns are good value.

All manner of hand-builts available. Or the likes of Scribe. Or any number of Chinese direct to consumer.

Personally I'd be thinking about what's in stock, when and whether the transaction will be with an entity in the UK.
  • I'm in the MF camp, Hunt are over priced and over rated for what they are. As for alternatives, if you can wait then I'd suggest Light Bicycle or speak to a UK wheelbuilder like DCR wheels.

Definitely don't bother with ceramic bearings, the difference is negligible in reality.

I had a couple of sets of Hunts and I’ve had no trouble with any of them.

There's an awful lot of guff spoken about wheels. The main gripe with Hunts is they are a bit expensive compared to similar alternatives. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about other than the odd £100 here and there.

you'd have had no trouble with Prime, Selcof, Planet X, Merlin, Chinese stuff as they're all built with the exact same components but ypu would have spent half the money you did.

Hunts - mediocre for the money they cost, fine at half the price.

Personally if I was the OP I'd jump on that deal the V Man posted today - half the price of Hunts plus tyres.

I think they've sold out but CRC had 50mm Prime disc wheels at £405 with a discount code. It was in the bargains thread last week. Somebody else posted it and I took advantage.

Was looking at the Scribe website today for some new training wheels. They look pretty competitively priced. And they actually have some wheels in stock.

When you spec those up with Novatec, they are cheaper, but you don't get the same UK consumer protection. Up to you if it is worth paying for. If you go for one of the better hub options, they soon get a bit pricey.

Hunt use Novatec and charge full whack so I'd go with L/B or, tbh, anyone else.

Well that goes without saying doesn't it?

The ones I got from Zed wheels seem good for the price - he's UK based. So are Scribe, and you can also get Winspace from a UK vendor. I would put all those a bit higher up the list than Hunts to be honest.

But below a certain price point hubs are all just hollow shells with generic press fit bearings and it doesn't make a lot of difference. If my training wheels are shot, its about £350 for Hunts or £290 for Scribes. Will depend who has stock. Hunts are a bit lighter, but not by much. So, meh.

I've been talked out of them, looking at some hand builts on scope rims, or Zipp 303's if I can find them
  • If you want to buy Hunt wheels,I would recommend you go Hunt carbon spoke wheel,I bought a Elitewheels Drive G45 carbon spoke wheelset,1308g actual weight,I have been researching between different brands.but finally pull triger on it after watching GC performance video.
I put the wheel on Trek Boone 2022 Black rode on all surfaces and have raced on them many times. Wheels with carbon spokes are more responsive, so they can accelerate faster. Their stillness give them a performance benefit while racing.
Most recently, I raced the US Cyclocross Nationals with them on an extremely bumpy and rough course, and was able to run air pressure at 28psi. They performed awesomely and soaked up the rough terrain very well. I plan on using them for gravel racing this year and using Challenge Gravel Grinder 36s. They might even become my road wheels after this season, or I will purchase yet another set of Elitewheels wheel for the road.Maybe Drive 50D but look forward to new products to come out.
