Compatibility question.

I’m building a Spesh TT bike and I’m wondering if a 10 speed Tiagra 4700 set-up will work with 10 speed SL-BS79 Dura Ace bar end levers.

Thanks.

I think the 4700 stuff is incompatible with other shimano 10 speed - a 9 speed Sora mech would probably be compatible however

10s Tiagra components are limited in compatibility. Works with 10s tiagra, and (I think) 11s 105/ultegra/da.
10sp DA shifters will work with 10sp 105 or 10s Ultegra derailleur. Will also work with Shimano 9s road or mtb derailleur. not 10s mtb.

Thanks. I think the 6600 Ultegra is 10 speed.

I’m so tempted to build it into a road bike. It’s a Specialized Transition Comp.

  • What about Dura Ace 9000 11 speed bar end gear levers and 11 speed Ultegra?

Just been following a Specialized Transition on eBay that uses Tiagra 4700 and the Dura Ace levers that I mentioned in my initial post.
I messaged the seller about them working together and he replied saying they run as smooth as silk and were actually fitted to the bike when he bought it.

Although reading elsewhere tells me it doesn’t.

Hmmm, have you ridden a TT bike? They usually make horrible road bikes, thanks to geometry mainly. Designed to be low front, aero in straight lines, and not really for hills or corners. They handle badly and are usually relatively heavy, and uncomfortable unless you are actually on the aero bars.

    That's probably fine.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

From what I see on the Shimano compatibility archive site, 10 spd Dura Ace bar end shifters will pull the gear cable to match the RD up suitably with 10 speed cassettes - the cogs are 3.95mm apart (Inc cog width of 1.6). This is the same spacing spec as current Tiagra 10spd cassettes. The compatibility doesn't work out if you change to 11 speed.

So does that all mean that I can use Shimano Tiagra RD4700 and Shimano BL-SL79 bar end levers??
  • Gonna have to build it into a road bike now. My Dolan got nicked off a job this morning.

    I don't think so.

Change of plan now anyway. See my earlier post. ☹️
