Bike choice advice.

Hi all.
1st post so take it easy with me.
Have recently retired at the age of 66 and still reasonably fit and active.
Have decided to take up cycling as a hobby that will also keep me fit and occupied.
My preference when cycling is gravel towpaths and light riverside trails with normal roads
to and from riverside start and finish. But expect my riding to average out to be 50/50 road and trail.
Am anticipating ride duration to be anything between 2 to 4 hours a couple of times a week and
general errand running.
I have a budget of up to £1300 and am currently eying up a Trek dual sport 3 equipped, 2022 model for £950.
Is that a good choice or is there something more suitable/better out there that my many internet hours have not spotted?
Thanks.

Hi and welcome.
Have you ridden much over your 66 years and if so, what kind of bike? I think cycling is an excellent thing to do to keep you active and is a good way to explore the outdoors.
Have you decided you want flat bars or are you also considering drop bars?
You may or may not need suspension - depending on things like tyre size, frame material and how bumpy the gravel is.
Have you looked at planet-x?
Something like an On-One whippet - which can be had with a rigid fork or a suspension fork- might be worth a look: https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/YBOOWHSX/on-one-whippet-sram-sx-carbon-fork-mountain-bike0 -
Welcome. 🙂
Hard to compare from this end of the world (Oz) but that Trek seems expensive for what it is, and given your ride routes I’d also think there are better options in your budget. It’s relatively heavy, has low end groupset which is no longer upgradeable ( can’t replace the shifters or derailleurs with anything “better” in 9 speed), and has old-tech wheels etc.
An MTB might work - stock availability on anything is the issue, but something like this:

But as above, Planet X are good too. This looks a cracking deal just now…

Can you borrow a couple different types to try and see how your skills comfort matches up on the bikes?

Still sticking with flat bars, a Ribble CGR could be good:
