Crimpers
As my daughter is looking to buy me something for Christmas and always asks me what I want that I'll use, I was going to ask her for a pair (set?) of cable end cap crimpers.
I suppose a simple solution would be to buy some cutters with the crimper built in but this would irrationally irk me as I already have some cutters and I also suspect that a dedicated tool that just crimps will do a better job.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a good set of crimpers?

Just get some small nosed pliers for £5 and don't squeeze too hard when you are crimping. I'm sure Silca will do a 3D printed titanium one with hand stitched leather covered handles, but it might not be value for money.0

Knipex do all manner of quality crimping gadgets / pliers, have a Google. Probably overkill just for the little cable end caps on bikes though. As above, I just use a small pair of narrow-nosed pliers I keep in my bike toolbox.0

One of these would be nice. It melts the cable, so no more frayed cable ends or end caps needed.
It's $999.99 so it might give your daughter a bit of a shock.0 -
You aren't supposed to use it on people.masjer said:One of these would be nice. It melts the cable, so no more frayed cable ends or end caps needed.

Nice!
It might work as a defibrillator- useful when presented with a $999 bill.0 -
Some of the best tools are built to perform a single purpose.laurentian said:I bought myself some pretty good cable cutters a while ago but they don't have a built in crimper.

It does depend on what you want to crimp, electrical cable, fishing line, wire rope (like brake/gear cables on a bicycle) for example. Each has their own tools. Using the wrong tool can be a disaster/expensive.
As with most things there are tools meant for the occasional home use and professional tools meant for use on a daily basis by pros. This is often reflected in the price paid.
Is it critical that you get the crimp just right?
How often would you use them?
Just a couple of the questions you need to ask yourself

Thanks all.
@Munsford0 - I will have a look at Knipex - not a brand I had come across before so thanks
@masjer - that looks ideal but I fear I would spend my entire life buying cable just to snip it! (plus daughter would be destitute until the summer)
@Charlie_Croker it's not like I'd be using it very often - only when I change cables on my bikes but, as I already have a cutter, a dedicated crimper would be greatWilier Izoard XP0 -
I use something similar to this but a much cheaper, nastier, flimsier thing and it works just fine.
This one would be a Lexus compared to mine:

or a Rolls Royce:

I own some ratchet crimpers for electrical work (similar to toolstation above) and never used them on the bike before.
Just tried them, they work perfectly.0 -
Update:
Just tried them on a gear cable- they don't work.
Fine on thicker brake cable but not worth it just for that.
I always just use pliers.1 -
Thanks for the heads up masjerWilier Izoard XP0

That’s probably why my cheap as chips, rubbish one works perfectly. It’s a non-ratchet, just squeeze hard affair.masjer said:Update:

I use a pair of mole grips that have nicely serrated jaws.

I just gently chew the cable end caps.1

Im a sparky so use boot lace ferrules and the appropriate crimper but i have thousands in a box.
Any old plier seems good enough for those normal bike cable ones.0 -
I keep clicking on this thread expecting to see a link to something like these.

There's also a Jagwire one from Tredz (avoids the expensive post from Holland)edward.s said:https://hollandbikeshop.com/en-gb/bicycle-tools-maintenance/bicycle-tools/hand-tools/pliers/elvedes-cable-nipple-pliers-for-inner-cable-blue-480340/
