Hi a local club barman asked me if I knew what was wrong with his bike
Being a nice chap I said I’d see if anyone in the forum could help .
When he pulls away the pedal jumps down then rides ok
Bike is a Giant 24 gear 3 ring 8 cog cassette .
Apparently he has changed the chain and cassette. He has also checked pedal
And chain ring tightness
My first thought was that he may Have a sticking link or maybe an extra link .
Any thoughts or help would be gratefully acepted
Many thanks Tom B

From your description, I can only think it’s a chain alignment problem. [not a problem as such]
If the chain is not in a straightish line and the pedal/crank is rotated backwards in order to get the pedal into the starting position for setting off, the chain may move to a different cog on the cassette. Then jump to the correct gear (in line with the derailleur) as soon as you start pedalling, perhaps?

The above is a valid theory and I'll throw in more possibilities.
Maybe the chainring is really worn and skipping under the new chain with the extra setting off torque applied.
Maybe an unrelated problem with the freehub pawl engagement being sticky somehow. 🤔0 -
This is almost nailed on sticky freehub, no?Ben

Many thanks chaps I wil take these back to him and see how he goes
Tom BWhoops who did that!1 -
Would also be worth mentioning it would narrow down possibilities if your Barman could spot more accurately what is happening as he sets off.
I reckon if he gets it worked out a free drink for your good self would be fair compensation. 🍺😉1 -
Thanks reaper I was thinking of getting him to pop round
and getting it on my stand and trying to spot the problem
Reason that might be two pints🍺🍺🤭Whoops who did that!1 -
