I have heard some stories of people receiving their parcel, opening it and using it etc etc, and then getting a subsequent demand for fees etc a couple of weeks down the line. Not saying it will happen, and I hope it does not, but it's a pretty underhand tactic from some of these couriers imho.

I've heard of rare late demands for fees & taxes for stuff ordered from the USA too.

The EU is fairly similar to the USA now.
The supplier can register for UK taxes, which costs them in registration fees, and the costs of keeping their software up to date with UK regulations. It's up to them to decide whether the amount of their UK business warrants the costs or not.

For EU orders, there's a minimum limit (~ £135) below which registration is mandatory. Over the limit, they can say that the taxes are the customers problem, which in practice means that the delivery company (DPD or whoever) take care of it, charging you a flat rate £12 or so for the privilege. The limit is why some EU webshops have minimum orders.
For US orders, I don't think there's a minimum limit - I've kopped the delivery supplement for a relatively small (£20) order in the past.
