Chainrings, not ramped or pinned for shifting assistance?
Hello,
I am thinking to buy Surly steel chainrings for my classic 70s bike. Sizes of chainrings will be 42/52. Surly chainrings are not ramped or pinned for shifting assistance. I use a modern Shimano 105 front derailleur with a friction Shimano downtube shifter. Would it be fine to use Surly chainrings or I better buy standard aluminium chainrings form TA Specialties or Miche for gears?

They managed fine in the 70s with non-ramped or pinned rings and so will you, particularly with a friction shifter. A couple of our bikes have non-ramped rings and they shift well.1
