Convert SRAM X5 3 Speed to 2?

I've bought an old Boardman Hybrid which for some odd reason, has a 2x9 setup but a 3 speed SRAM X5 on the front derailleur. Anyone know if this can be blocked or otherwise modified internally to restrict it to 2 speed, or do I need to replace it?

    The usual way to do that is to use the limit screws on the front mech to only let it move over the 2 cogs. That doesn't do anything to the shifter, but does make it so that you can't select the third gear. That may well already have been done, in which case you don't need to do anything.
