New Chain!

Just went to order a new 11 speed Shimano chain and fell off my chair when I saw these are now £30-40!
eBay have them much cheaper but I have no idea if they are legit.
Can anyone point me to a place where I can get a genuine Shimano 105/Ultegra chain for a reasonable cost? Last time I think I paid £15.

Welcome to 2021. I think you can get 105 from about £25 - try Merlin.
I just replaced the chain and cassette on my MTB for £75, I was expecting maybe £50 -£55.
I think the price rises have actually saved me money as I no longer buy cycling stuff on impulse and I've sold some bits and bobs that would otherwise have sat in the garage probably until I died or moved to sheltered accommodation![Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]2 -

I doubt you will be able to pay £15 quid anytime soon.

We shouldn't complain though when there are more serious shortages.

As above... higher prices means I am spending less... I buy less and tend to make thing last longer... it involves risking mechanical issues, but since I no longer do long distance cycling, it is a minor issue.
It's probably a good thing if we all think twice before buying stuff anyway.left the forum March 20230 -
Dont buy cheap chains off ebay most of the Shimano ones are fake, come in propper box but the link chain loose fit is the giveaway.0

So the fakers can fake the chain easily enough, but they struggle with faking the joining links....?banditvic said:Dont buy cheap chains off ebay most of the Shimano ones are fake, come in propper box but the link chain loose fit is the giveaway.

If there’s such a shortage of new bikes I’d have thought the 2 that I’m selling would’ve been sold by now. ☹️Ncovidius said:https://road.cc/content/tech-news/when-will-britains-bike-shortage-end-285885

I think it may be a case that the mental demand seen during the lockdown phases of the pandemic have stripped the shelves bare. The demand is less now, but the re supply of new bikes is proving problematic. Even that is a bit lop sided though. If you want a high end bike, it seems that they are relatively easier to come by, than the entry level / mid range bikes at present.darrell1967 said:

Well prices tend to always go up. What I can't follow is why people have all these reservations about spending a bit of money on small parts, yet don't seem to think much of spending a goodly amount on the latest and fanciest of carbon bikes. All in an effort to have something to show off.0

Have bought from Hopkinson Cycles' ebay store over the years, a real shop with good prices on genuine stock - KMC X11 is currently £21.95.

Got caught with this. Put chain on and checked it with chain tool to find it was already fully stretched. Chucked it in the bin.banditvic said:Dont buy cheap chains off ebay most of the Shimano ones are fake, come in propper box but the link chain loose fit is the giveaway.
SRAM 1110 eleven speed chain can be bought fairly cheaply.0 -
£14 from Halfords https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-parts/gears-drivetrain-and-cables/sram-pc-1110-solidpin-powerlock-chain-114-links-423403.html'Hello to Jason Isaacs'0

IME those cheap SRAM chains are mince. I once spent hours trying to diagnose why I could quite get indexing right and it turned out to be the new cheap SRAM chain. (Documented here https://forum.bikeradar.com/discussion/13088619/hesitant-shifting-what-else-to-try)
The chain is probably the most important part of your drive train so it's worth paying a little extra for quality (durability and/or efficiency). By most accounts, Dura Ace 11 speed chains are both fast and durable, but you'll get 105 and KMC EL for less than £30, which are both decent.
If you want to extend the life of your chain, cassette and chainrings as well as keep your bike clean, consider immersion waxing instead of oil for lube.0
