rim tape / width (post puncture)

Hi all

Got a set of Giant SLR1 aero wheels which came as a tubeless setup. Replaced the tape recently in a hurry and didn't make note of the width first. I also got impatient and went for a ride using 2 wraps of electrical tape. Fine the first couple of rides, then got a puncture during a longer ride. The tape had recessed slightly into the spoke holes and that's where the hole lines up.

Going to continue using tubes for a bit and I was looking at muc-off as a replacement, so that I can maybe go back to tubeless in future. Width wise, I am reading internal rim width +2/3mm, does that sound about right? Mine are 622x17, 23 overall. They have a 17 or 21mm option, so would 21 make sense?

Thanks

Sounds about right - internal width +2/3mm. So 21mm.

thanks. any other brands worth a shout before I go for Muc-off? Want tape that's thick enough to protect these holes as I'll be using tubes for a while. Unless I double wrap..

No particular recommendations from me, but double-wrapping will help when you go tubeless.

Have used Tessa tape and Schwalbe in the past, although the Schwalbe is significantly more costly I find it much easier to wrap as well as being a little thicker and comes in many different widths. Worth the extra cost in my opinion, have never used Muc-off though.

thanks. ordered the muc off tape. Out of curiosity, the old tape that I peeled off these wheels from factory have left a sticky layer on the rear wheel with a small film over the spoke holes. Is it best to clean them and completely remove or will a sticky surface be better for the new tape?

    thanks

Thanks all. Have tried cleaning as best as I could. Some remains but the new tape is fine and all back together. Appreciate the answers!

Muc off recommends sticky label remover for cleaning wheel rims. I have used this and also Meths before reapplying rim tape.
