Silly seat post and chain sucking

Does anyone know how to fix a seat post that does not stay tighten. I don't have the one you tighten with an alan key so no matter how tight I make it, it drops shortly after ?!?

2nd question please, how to fix chain sucking for good!! It's a new bike and have a lot of teething issues already.

Thank you.

is it the right sized seat post?

    are you missing any shims?

Remove any normal slippy grease you may have put on.

copperslip or carbon paste will also help as the gritty bits stop it slipping. remember, never go in dry.

I had a bike with a seat post that kept dropping an inch. Very annoying. Turns out the clamp was overtightened at some point and distorted the seat post. I had to get a new one and that sorted the issue.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

  • Thanks Matt! It is a new bike so it should be the right sized seat post and no shims missing from what I can see. I have not added any extra grease either so it could be something else.

Agree, never go in dry! :)

If its a new bike can you not have a go at the supplier to sort it.

This is complicated, I'd rather go elsewhere. ;)

  • I am going to try a different clamp yes. Nothing more of a pain with an
unwanted dropping post when you navigating tight corners and tree routes!

    What bike is it?
You shouldn't be getting any chain suck on a new bike.

wrt the slipping seat post, remove it and thoroughly clean it and the inside of the seat tube. Then apply a smear of carbon paste to the post and refit. You shouldn't have to tighten the seat clamp a massive amount. If it is qr the pressure should be just enough to leave an indentation in your hand when you close it.

  • JBA : Looks like I managed to fix the seat post from dropping by not tightening it too much and removed some of the copius amount of grease that was on it!

Dabber : As for the chain sucking, it seldom happens but enough that it's removed some paint and metal already. I took it do the dealer who I bought it from and they just said " wow we have never seen this before" "sorry, we can't help you". So I am taking it up with the manufacturer now.

It's a really nice bike and rides like a dream, but I am considering to sell it and buy a Giant instead, just can't go wrong with them!

It's not SRAM Eagle 12 is it? If it is, is the chain properly synced with the chainring?

If it is a brand new bike the dealer is fobbing you off. If there is a problem with new goods the seller has to, by law, sort it out. If the seller can't fix it they can go back to the manufacturer. The buyer does not have to go to the manufacturer themselves.

But answer my question. What gears do you have? Chainring, chain, cassette, rear derailleur.
