My neighbour just brought me a thank you gift for putting his bins out while he was away. I'm not sure if it's a coded message and should go round and punch his lights out. :D

I thought you were from Coventry, not Dorset? :p
Glad somebody got there eventually, thought I was going to have to make the obvious comment.

U2. Or you too. Or utility vee-hickle aka bakkie.

Raised bed raised and looking good. All my preshusss timber sleepers used bar a single 15cm offcut. Happy with that given the crazy pricing currently.
I did this with sleepers and shifted some Peony's into it that often got wrecked with a bit of wind (plenty of that here), especially as the flower heads are heavy.
2 weeks ago saw me sticking 12 or so Bamboo canes into it because of a windy weather warning. They survived.
I think the Peony's are taking over quite nicely.

That's not a peony. This is a peony.

Just wait till I take a pic when they are all in full bloom - and you don't have the Jockish weather to deal with and I have 2 dozen whereas you only have a few.

    Pinno 1 - Hoppy 1

[Not the best light to take pics but at least I still have a little daylight  ]
For that, you can have a picture of this Honeysuckle that'll knock you out (smells gorgeous at this time of night unlike your socks according to Seano)

Wait till jasmine comes in! Just by the back doors, with the scent of the roses. C'est super.

Only a bit of friendly rivalry. I'm late to the joys of the right feed and fertiliser and the pruning etc. I can’t be arsed with a proper garden, but raised beds and pots. No mowing.

    Anyhoo:

    I have:

    5 Silver birch
Have planted 13 Hawthorne, 7 Purple beech, 14 Beech (hedge repair/fill)
    1 Oak (planted in '83)
    4 Sycamore's
2 Sitca spruce (planted by me 'in '86 after a brief summer job with the Forestry commission - freebies)
    1 Rowan
    2 Ygelia Floridensis
A huge bank of Purple Rhododendron
    1 White Rhody
    1 Horse Chestnut
    A Virginia creeper
    2 varieties of Clematis
    A large juniper
    3 Various ornamental firs
A plethora of shrubs including a young Pieris
A vegetable patch growing spuds, Brocolli, Spring onions, Chives, Carrots, Green beans and Asparagus (that'll take at least 2 seasons before a crop)
    2 Ewe trees
1 very small (but with hooge potential) Cotinus grace
    Hanging baskets
A very old Belfast sink with Petunias
    1 Oak sapling
    2 Hawthorne saplings
    Begonias (just appearing now)
    1 Cheery tree
    1 Japanese Cherry tree
    7 apple trees
    3 Magnolia's
Various waxy leaf flowering bushes (type unknown - need to download that app)
    Short section of Privet
    2 yellow flowering Berberis
2 small Fuscias - unusual flower, white with Cerise centre which will be planted in the hedge sometime
    2 established pink flowering Fuscia's
    A healthy cluster of Bamboo
1 pond with a white flowering Japanese water lily
    1 fledgling 'Silver lady' Bush
    1 (also young) Hydrangea

So you should manage a few pot plants in that overpriced postage stamp of a garden you have - and they ought to be spectacular.

    Any plastic grass?

    Lol

No. Wouldn't dream of it (bar 2' x 4' under the swing where the girls have worn it away perhaps).
Might put a patch of (boarded) Chick pea under it.

I must say though, i've always done the lawns, hedges, general digging, apple tree pruning and weeding that Mum couldn't physically do but I was never really into gardening. But now having inherited the place, it's got me bitten. The garden is looking lovely if I don't say so myself, after I initially pulled out floundering plants, cut 6 trees down, took out failing flower beds and planted loads of Hardy perennials, put in borders, had a mammoth war on Ivy, started mitigating hedge killed by the latter...
If I think back to pre PPP, the house is hard to believe - I must keep reminding myself of that.

    'Ute' ?

As @oxoman et al note, it’s a Utility Vehicle.

    One of these:

Ride when unloaded is appalling, because it has rather heavy “light truck” tyres on it. Swapping out to a more passenger car style to see if that helps.

That's a proper 'Ute' not like one of those faux SUV's.

@oxoman : I have 1 Witch hazel and 1 plain Hazel. They are virtually next to each other. The Plain Hazel is upright and has some symmetry, whereas the Witch Hazel is really Gnarly and grows in all directions.
I didn't know the difference until someone pointed it out and could never work out why they both had identical leaf, similar thickness of branches and colour but looked so different.
Apparently, the Witch Hazel has medicinal properties, hence it's name.

PS Leylandii - chop it up, set alight to it and chuck it...
    (fcuking PITA that stuff)
My mate has a hedge made of it. Until last year, I used to cut it twice a year for him and then I said 'i've enough gardening to do myself and I hate this job. you're on your own'.
He can't complain - done enough work on his precious Mini.
He owes me big time. I have stacking truck loads of wood lined up for him and other chores :)

Not me either, although utes are a huge part of car culture here. Toyota HiLux regularly tops the vehicle sales charts here altogether. Local ute manufacturers went all arms race on them for a while and it was possible to buy a 330 kw and 500+ Nm powered one off the showroom floor.

Now our car industry no longer exists, they’re all imported giant Tonka Toy style rubbish.

Overpriced? I paid (relatively speaking) fcuk all for it, due to it being a distressed sale post '08 crash.

It's also close to civilisation - shops, restaurants, public transport, which is a big plus point, and 2 enormous green spaces within walking/cycling distance

If I had a big garden, I'd only have to pay a gardener, and anyway, the countryside smells of cowsh*t, and is full of chippy inbreds. :)

Naaah. I know you're a man of interesting past who has seen the world, and who has chosen to live where you do. Some of these rural types haven't even seen the next village.

Strictly speaking, I think I'm from tlw's neck of the woods - I was born in Bromsgrove, lived for 18 months as a babby in Kidderminster. Then Cov until 18, then Southampton for 3 years, then Cov for a year, Brum for 2, then Lunnon ever since. So if I'm anything, I'm a Lunnoner, having lived there the longest.

I recall two inpatients in Cheltenham General. One was having a knee op and the other, a hip op. Both faaaarmers.
Farmer 1 was from Toddington (Glos.). Farmer 2 was from Tewksbury. In the same ward. They would not talk to each other. Farmer 1 got a flask and sandwiches delivered everyday by his wife.
Do not move to Dalrymple (Ayrshire). They are even hostile to other Scots. I don't know exactly who they would tolerate.
...and then there's the stunning picturesque Naunton. But don't move there unless you first meet the criteria of the locals and you'd better have a cupboard full of lace bowl covers.
