Bellingham to Newcastle Central Station

Trying to join Route 72 at Heddon Haugh to reach Newcastle Central Station. Looking on a variety of mapping sites there may be a connection at the end of Station Road to the 72.
Can anyone confirm this? I don't want to be casting back and forth with a train to catch!
Thanks, John

  • As it happens we went a different way.
My overall route had been part of the Coast & Castles Sustrans No.1 Starting at Newcastle railway Station we took Route 72 to Tynemouth, stopping at the Hub for coffee after only a few hundred yards. Route 1 continued from Tynemouth without drama to Amble where we stayed at the Amble Inn, a mile or so off the route but very pleasant. 50miles
Next day was to Berwick upon Tweed but the last 10/11 miles was slow and difficult off road and sandy tracks. 60 miles
Day 3 was a slow start with road works but worse, the Union Bridge was closed and we wasted 2 miles to realise this. It's been closed a while and doesn't look to be opening any time soon! Detour via Horndean and Ladykirk to re-join 1 but this actually neutralised the extra miles we'd incurred going to the bridge. We turned south above Coldstream and made our way to Wooler. 36 miles.
Day 4 was another slow start following route 68, rough tracks, stream crossings and no coffee shops until Elsdon! After refreshments we made it to Bellingham. 45 miles.
Day 5 was supposed to be a bag free day trip to Kielder and a second night in Bellingham but with tired legs and a train to catch on Monday we split the journey with a short ride to Hexham to pick up the 72 to Corbridge, 24 miles and the last day was a tootle to Newcastle on the 72 and the 14, more coffee at the Hub and a train home. 30miles
Sunshine every day and fair winds, very enjoyable but some publicity re the bridge closure and a better understanding of the ground conditions would have been good. We live and learn.

We did the tour of Northumberland a couple of wks ago and started at tynemouth and finished at tynemouth and discovered the same as you the bridge was out. The diversion was brilliant not. We should have done coast and castles from Edinburgh to tynemouth but some tart shut the border. PS we cheated as well using a baggage courier. Reasonable weather apart from day 4 when it was biblically damp and windy riding to Amble. Lovely countryside.
Too many bikes according to Mrs O.
  • Flexibility is the key these days. Our original plan was Newcastle to Aberdeen with a break at our son's house in Edinburgh. HeyHo! There's always tomorrow!
