Cassette Spacer

Quick question. I’ve got an 11 speed cassette and an 11 speed freehub, I may or may not (it was late, I was tired) have lost a very thin metal spacer that goes at the back of the cassette before adding cassette to freehub. Like I say I’m not sure whether I lost it or not. Do I need one? Problem is the cassette was on tight and I destroyed my chain whip getting it off. So when I went to put the cassette back on I didn’t really tighten up the cassette (I didn’t want to commit to a full tighten due to having no chain whip) so finger tight and put it back onto the bike. Found that it was really hard to pedal and couldn’t pedal backwards. Is this because the cassette wasn’t tightened? Can you see my predicament?
Sorry realised this isn’t a quick question at all.

    Problem solved, chain whip fixed, now onto the next issue
