New bike for commuting/hacking about

My existing commuter, a Jamis Nova, is pretty “tired”, has suffered a couple of spills, shifters bashed, wheels (their 2nd set) suffering seriously rusty spokes, transmission also worn with some duff shifting between sprockets. I am eyeing up Planet X’s Fat Baz Hybrid bike as a replacement for the crappy roads i commute on. I know this bike is pretty “cheap” but a fairly sturdy 1xbike might just do the trick for commuting and short rides with my wife on her e-bike.

I’ve been looking at s/h bikes but finding one the right size plus dealing with worn components suggests that whilst I can change chains, cassettes etc easy enough I’m usually buying into an bike that hasn’t been well cared for and could absorb money which a new bike should not.
I can’t see many reviews of the Fat Baz which I would ideally like.

Anyone care to comment?
