Ultegra lockring not fitting hub

Hi folks. on changing my cassette my new ultegra lockring wont fit my hub. The wheels are fulcrum racing 3's and i had a dura ace 12-25 on it before. The lockring that came of seems wider. I tried using the original lockring on the ultegra cassette but it fowls the chain when on the 11t sprocket. anyone had this problem before?

thanks

Check that the smaller sprockets are correctly seated.

Been ages since 11T wasn't my hardest sprocket on a bike, but doesn't the lockring have to match the sprocket, so a 12T lockring will cause problems for a new cassette with an 11T?

    10 or 11 speed?
Are the old and new cassette both the same number of gears?
If the wheels are compatible with both 10 and 11 speed, then there will be a spacer that you need to fit for 10 speed, but you need to remove it for 11 speed.

No they are all the same. If the lock ring is further out than the hub, something isn't quite seated. You can sometimes get the lock ring on there, even so. Most likely it is the 11t because the final sprocket itself sits proud of the free hub and so only has intents rather than slots to go over the splines. Quite easy to be mis-installed.

    Easy to check though.

Are you using a spacer of any sort?

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks ago, it was the 11T ring that was not sitting correctly. It seems that it can be turned around the keys on the freehub and it will still fit. You only notice that it's not sitting square when you look very closely at the ring.

The actual threaded part of the lockring are different diameters. The one that came off is wider than the ultegra that i want to put on. the cassette fits on fine and everything is seated.

Lockrings for Shimano/Sram are all one size as far as I'm aware so they will all fit Shimano/Sram freehubs. (It's not Campag or XD is it?).
Will the lockring on its own screw into the end of the freehub?

This, especially checking without the cassette on.

Do you really mean different diameters? Or are you talking about the thickness of the lockring / number of threads?

I mean different diameter. it was a 10 speed dura ace cassette that came off and the 10 speed ultegra cassette has a different diamter lockring than the one that came off.

Post some pictures to show us the differences. The thread in the end of the freehub body into which is screws will be the same for all Shimano/Sram fittings, hence "does the lockring screw into the end of the freehub with no cassette mounted"?

This diameter should be the same

older fulcrum shimano 9/10 speed freehubs came with their own locking because they are a campagnolo company, the standard shimano lockring has a diameter that is too wide. Newer fulcrum 0/1/3 freehubs for 9/10/11 speed, the smooth white ones, accept the standard shimano lockings.

I've had this issue when the freehub is notched meaning the cassette doesn't happily sit far enough back when the wheel is upright. Try putting the wheel on its side, perhaps over the kitchen sink :)

Campag/Fulcrum alloy freehubs suck. Much prefer the steel ones but on both the bearings do not last at all.
