What do you estimate the size of this stem to be?

    It can be accurately measured from centre of steerer tube to the centre of the bars, I'd have a guess at over 100mm.

    How old is the bike? Until fairly recently long stems and narrow bars were common and suited the geometry of older design bikes.

    New bikes with quill risers are still on Halfords bikes.

    I was unfortunate enough to have to go in store to collect a 7 speed cassette and the bike mechanic was explaining to some concerned parents why the stem had come out causing their son to crash. :#

    Looks about 120mm, but difficult until you know the size of the bike.
