Boardman FS Team 2011. Repairable, or write off?

So, my lad was giving his Boardman FS Team 2011 a clean because he wants to sell it to upgrade, but found a break on the chain stay. Anybody know if this sort of thing can be repaired? I've had a good look around for a 2nd hand replacement but as it's quite an old bike, spare parts are few and far between.
Any advice must welcome and if you have one of these parts you'd like to sell, please drop me a line.
Thanks

It is not really clear, but it looks to me as though it is the cross brace just in front of the rear wheel that has cracked.

Google "bike welding repair near me" and see where that gets you. I saw several likely prospects.

I know that aluminium alloys used on bikes can be welded because I have seen references to it being done successfully on other websites. But what did they mean by "successful"? The reviews I saw were more concerned with how it looked. I know that some alloys require heat treatment, and welding would sure make a mess of that! Maybe your ten-year old frame is of an alloy that didn't require heat treatment to give it the design strength, maybe the welder can make it thicker at that point to counter that?

If you find someone and get the work done, please report back with details, you will not be the only one needing this service. Good luck! :)
  • Thanks for the reply Steve. My concern is the durability of the repair, but I suppose if you don't try you'll never know!
Please see a better pic for clarity., 👍

If he's cleaning it up to sell I suspect it's not worth getting it repaired. To sell it and maintain any sort of decency you would have to be honest abput the repair, I suspect that would affect the price and put a lot of buyers off. I suspect your best bet would be to strip it down and sell the parts. You could sell the damaged frame, someone may be willing to take it and get it repaired or they may have a damaged front triangle and buy that as a donor. Doing it that way absolves you of the responsibility of selling a functioning bike.

    That's a very good point @veronese68
In fact the cost of the repair would probably exceed the value of the bike if it hadn't needed the repair. Therefore it is probably beyond economic repair. :'(
