Well I suppose anything that is a safety feature can't make it less safe.
M.I.P.S. is well known tech and seemed to be a big deal when it was introduced.
I may as well go for the version with an added safety feature. Thanks for the input @w7london.👍0 -
Yes, you are damn right about the extraordinary comfort of Giro. I have also been looking for it and finally, find the right place for the mountain bike helmets in budget.reaperactual said:After a good look around online and watching a lot of YouTube reviews I've decided to go for a Giro Fixture helmet. Lots of vents to keep cool this Spring and Summer.
So far it seems to tick my boxes, looks nice, is light, fits well? and sold at a fair price. There seems to be a MIPS and non MIPS version.
Just thought I'd throw the question out there for anyone who has this or similar Giro helmet and can give me a true heads up (pun?) on pro's and cons if any? I'm not particularly bothered about having MIPS at this point.
If anyone recommends getting the MIPS rather than not I'll happily be swayed on this.
As always any comments and thoughts are welcomed. Thanks!

Apologies for reviving an old thread. Still not bought a helmet yet but am really, really liking the Bell Super 3 and almost at the point of splashing out on one.
I've decided on the Downdraft colour version, without the chin bar for now in view of buying separately in the near future as and when it's required.

Is the Bell Super worth the cash and does the quality show it's worth the price tag? Any other comments to convince me to spend (or not?) more than I anticipated will be appreciated.
Measured my head circumference at 60cm's so the large seems to be the right size to go for. Would love to try one on locally for sizing first but feel it's going to be a bit cheeky to try it on and then tell them I'm not gonna buy it from them. 😬😆0 -
Though no one likes spending almost £200 on a helmet just buy the one with the chinbar and be done with it.
£179.99 for the MIPs version on preorder at Tredz. The difference is less than you'd spend for a day at BPW on the uplift.1 -
Lol! Mully you big spender, I'm a Tight Ar#e bargain hunter and rather knacker myself out and pedal up instead of paying for an uplift.😆
Just missed out on a nearly new Matt Black Bell Super with chin bar for £120 on Ebay. 😭
Anyhow I'm not going to any bike parks soon and don't go very often. I've seen chin bars going for £40ish so don't mind waiting for a deal to come along.
I'm getting impatient and want to finally get a lid sorted for the warmer weather but suppose I should really be more concerned about trying to get a MIPS version which is worth spending on.
Yeah thanks for the heads up Mully and will have another scout around for a bargain and I'll check out the pre order times at Tredz amongst other shops.👍0 -
Yep, you don't want to be even just a little bit brain damaged!w7london said:Get the MIPS. Always get the MIPS. I know there's conflicting advice on whether it will actually help, but for a few extra quid, the chance that it might be safer is worth it in my book.
I caught another tree branch on Wed. About 3" diameter, right on top of the helmet. It knocked me off the bike and my mates said I was staggering about for a few seconds. Bit of a headache for 5 mins or so. Bit of neck pain the following day. Small dent in the helmet but no other damage I could find, shell and body all fine. The cradle inside had been dislodged, but was easily re-attached. I reckon maybe a fractured skull without the helmet, or at least a lot of blood and dislodged skin (with tree bark ground in for good measure)!
Helmets are now so automatic and natural for me that I will not ride a bike without one. I have broken every helmet I have ever had except the one In have now and my full face.1 -
Haha, i'm a big spender with your money !
I just checked my Merlins account. My TLD A1 mips was £59.99.
My Bell Super 2R was £120 originally.
Current prices really have gone through the roof but its hard to tell if they'll ever come down and why stock is always low.

I have had two Bell Super helmets the 2 and I think the current one is a 3 (not sure). (I am wearing the first one in my signature pic alongside). I didn't buy the chin bar as well because I already had a Full Face helmet (MET Parachute). If you believe that you will be able to get a chin bar in time for that surprise outing to Bike Park Wales then go ahead without one. Personally, I'd get the chin bar and keep it. When you break your first Super 3, the chin bar will fit the next one you buy (and you will buy another).reaperactual said:Apologies for reviving an old thread. Yes the quality does shine through. The visor is adjustable, you will get a camera mount for the helmet (in the box). The internal cradle is removable and adjustable for height as well as circumference (by an easily to use wheel at the back of the head). The various straps and buckles are easily adjustable for that perfect fit. It's worth taking the time to do that.
I find that the vents provide good air flow, so it never feels too hot in summer, but the downside of that of course is that it can feel a bit chilly in the winter. I have a bald head so I feel the icy wind more than you fully hirsute guys. When it gets below about 6degC is when I feel the need to put something on my skull under the helmet.
I feel no need to remove the pads inside the helmet after a sweaty ride, I just put the whole helmet in a sink full of water and slosh it about a few times, rinse and repeat. Every few weeks I put some laundry disinfectant in the water. This keeps the helmet, pads and straps all sweet smelling and without any nasties growing in there. I have experienced no disintegration of the pads at all, unlike other pads that I used to remove and put in the washing machine. The Bell Super 2-3 is a tough helmet and provides more coverage of the head. I broke the first one by hitting a tree branch. Earlier this week I hit another branch and knocked myself off the bike. Apart from a small dent there was no other damage I could find. But even if it had been a write-off I would have bought another without hesitation.
Final accolade: My 13-year old grandson visited yesterday and asked if he could have a go on my bike. Of course he didn't have a helmet. He normally wears a Troy Lee Designs A1 - a very stylish helmet; he is very aware of what is "cool" and what is not. He borrowed my Bell Super in matt black and eventually when he handed it back said that he knew what he wanted for his birthday. Praise indeed!
@Reaper , buy a Bell Super and not only will you be in possession of a great helmet, but more importantly, you will be down with the youf!1 -
Yeah prices do seem higher than they used to be. I'll be finding a bargain if I can, with or without the chin bar for now but that depends on what I can find.mully79 said:Haha, i'm a big spender with your money !

Sold on the value of MIPS so will be insisting on that version for sure.
If you fancy giving me a donation I'll pay £175 and spend some of your massive fortune Mate!😆👍0 -
Well thanks Steve, as usual more straightforward, reliable advice and an excellent critique of the pro's of the Bell Super, I'm sold! 😎steve_sordy said:

You've had a couple of tree strikes so indeed safety is the most important factor. Hopefully you've no long term brain damage.
Being the wearer of more beach than waves these days I too shave my head so get the temperature concerns, lol. Since buying snoods and the various ways they can be worn then that shouldn't be an issue.
Thanks as always. I've made the decision to buy a MIPS, Bell Super 3 (or even 2 if it turns out that way) and can't wait to be part the Cool Kids Club. 😎🤙0 -
Update:-
Am now the proud owner of this Bell Super 3r MIPS Downdraft helmet!🥳
Re measured my head with string and tried my Buddy's Bell Super 2 on and turned out size M is best fit.
Finally found exactly what I was looking for on ebay. Brand new and won for £150 last night.
Expensive but still a bargain compared to retail prices and lucky as have been struggling to find in stock anywhere.
Thanks all for the advice. Can't wait to get my grubby hands on it.🤘

Great stuff reaper!
Remove the chin bar and then set up the helmet to fit. You will be taking it off and putting it back on so many times.... easier with the chin bar off. Don't forget that the cradle inside is height adjustable as well. Its not easy to do, but you will see that it has three positions.
Enjoy!1 -
Cheers Steve!😎👍 Very excited to have a mess around and get fit dialled in properly. Pretty sure that chin bar will be on and off a few times anyway.😆
Stuck my Buddy's on and just did a quick adjustment on the rear dial, have to say I was impressed and it felt really comfortable and a nice secure fit instantly.
You and others we're absolutely spot on with helping me decide to get this helmet, zero regrets and in every aspect one of my wisest purchases so far. Thank you Buddy!🤘🤙0 -
Nice buy.
Now you have to do the 'how fast can I attach the chin piece whilst wearing the helmet' challenge.

Last week or so I bought a Bell Super 3 helmet (no chin bar) in matt black size Large for my grandson. He used it a while ago and pronounced it "cool". I checked and his existing helmet is getting a bit small (it's an S/M). £87.99 + £7.99 p&p. So that's his birthday sorted! One of his smaller-headed but helmetless mates is going to get a free helmet!
I got it from BikeInn a Spanish company. I was a bit wary because many riders on my other bike forum have been having problems buying from the EU. Problems ranged from the courier wanting to collect VAT or a customs charge, or both! But I was assured by one member who said that he had received two separate purchases from BikeInn without any such problems. The helmet should be arriving in a five-day window, starting tomorrow.
I ordered more recently a "WTB Speed She" which is a female oriented MTB saddle for my granddaughter. Weird but it is the same delivery date. If I'd ordered them together I'd have saved £7.99. I guess they group the orders for the UK together into a container and ship the lot off at regular intervals, which makes sense from a logistics viewpoint.1 -
Oh yes, way 'cool' and a worthy accolade especially from the youf's, I'm down with that! 😎🤙😆
Ah Mate glad you're giving it a try ordering from Europe. Been so tempted by similar deals from Deporvillage, also based in Spain.
I did read up and calculate rough cost but then heard couriers are adding bogus or over priced admin fees on top? Suppose being wary and the unknown factor put me off in the end.
Interested to hear about how it works out and final costs. The stock is there and at a competitive price. Could well be just rumours or unreliable info?🤔0 -
The saddle is on the way to me, but the helmet is still in transit to their warehouse. In other words, when I ordered it, they didn't have any in stock! Not happy about that. But my grandson's birthday is not until August, so there's time.1
-
Hopefully a temporary minor glitch? Not being totally truthful about being in stock, I've been stung by that a couple of times within the UK from 'reputable' online shops too.🤔
At least your not leaving things to the last minute so reckon it'll be delivered well in time.🤞0 -
Wow super cool helmet.
So Far!1 -
Thanks @loltoride! 👍loltoride said:Wow super cool helmet.
Even nicer in the flesh, blown away and so glad I got one.
Can't recomend it highly enough and a great buy. Rare a rocking horse sh#t at the moment but reckon it will be replaced with the same again in future. 💯👌

Unfortunately it would not get much use with me although I am certainly looking for a new lid with more coverage. Looks great enjoy.reaperactual said:

You don't have to buy it with the chin bar! I bought the helmet without and I'm sure they sell more without the chin bar. If you have read the whole thread, you will, be aware that I use mine all the time. And yes, it does provide more coverage. The problem is in getting one. If you don't care about colour you should get one relatively easily.loltoride said:

I know that but its not the helmet I am looking at the moment.steve_sordy said:
