Fork upgrade

Hey folks
Thinking of upgrading the forks on my 2016 genesis tarn 20.
Currently running the original rockshox Reba so only 120mm.
Have seen a pair of fox 36 locally so 160mm on those. Anyone thinking ‘man that’s way too much travel for that bike’
Had originally thought about looking for something 140ish but...
Curious to know how much is too much.

I've no more knowledge on the subject than oxoman and agree increasing travel by 40mm is probably too much.
Geometry wise it's a positive step for stability at speed and for going downhill with approximately a 2 degree slacker head angle (0.5° slacker per 10mm travel increase) but climbing could be a struggle with your weight being thrown further back. Extra stress will be put on headtube and frame welds by changing HA so much, way beyond their tested safe limits I would imagine.
Some of the negative effects could be overcome a little by slamming your stem or lower rise bars and so on.
It all adds up to not being worth it and it'll just be a lot easier and less of an issue to stick with the generally acceptable 10-20mm fork travel increase imho.0 -
If theyre the proper version you maybe able to increase travel by just removing the spacer.
Check the sram service guide for your fork.0
