Strava problems - any suggestions?

I've used Strava since 2014 (free version) and when it used to work properly it suited me nicely. I want to record distance travelled, time taken, average speed and hills climbed. The other bits it does like showing segments and what I've done in the past is also interesting. Early last year it started to truncate rides in what appears to be a random way. So when I set off on a run it records properly then at some point it decides to stop recording. Later it starts up again but it draws a straight line connecting the two points. So now the stats are all completely useless. It is now doing this two out of three rides and so is completely unfit for purpose. I think Strava know about this, they had introduced a reporting system although they have modified that now to report location problems. They want me to pay for the improved version but the idea of paying for something that simply doesn't work isn't very attractive. Can anyone recommend a cycling / mapping APP that actually works? I tried Endomondo ages ago but that has now been withdrawn. Any help gratefully received.

It sounds like a GPS problem. Have you changed the device you record on?

I had this on a oneplus phone. The solution was to open Strava and then lock the app which then prevented it from restricting it in the background (which some phones do to maximise battery life).

I agree, doesn't sound like a Strava issue. Your device is losing its GPS connection.
What device are you using to record your rides / runs?

Forget it and enjoy riding your bike.

This sounds like the answer. If your battery settings are set to not get accurate location when the screen is off, then your strava will not be able to get a GPS fix.

I would be very surprised if there is anything in the paid version that fixes this for you. The paid for stuff is not around location tracking.

Having battery saving mode enabled on mine caused GPS problems with Strava, and other logging software.

To the OP, if you're still here. Assuming Android, open the app then press whichever button your phone uses to minimise the app (on mine it's a square on the bottom right of the home screen) then long press the app window and select lock. That works for me and is an easy workaround. Can't help you if it's an Apple issue though I'm afraid.
  • Thanks for the tips everyone. Its a Huawei phone so first thing I'll do is to try using the wife's Samsung see if that makes a difference. I'll let you know

Huawei phones are known for their aggressive battery saving approach which often results in GPS being disabled. Try this https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216942547?mobile_site=true&page=5#comment_360000310811
  • Just in case it helps anyone, the latest update of operating system on the Huawei P20 Pro (and other models I believe) means it won't work reliably with Strava or any APP that needs positioning info. This would include APPs for calling taxis etc so could be dangerous. I got round it by using an older Samsung phone for Strava on my bike. Think I'll avoid Huawei in future.

Just to add, I updated my Motorola G6 to a G8 Power and it interacts with nothing.
