Gear cable ends

How important are those bits that go on the ends of gear cables in the shifters? I just used the normal one that goes at the end of the outer, but I have just found the fancier version that have a tiny bit more to cover the cable. It would be a lot of work to put them on now, so what difference could it make?

Thanks. That was my suspicion, but it's never good finding a bit left over at the end and realising you should have used it.
