Never given this any thought before as my Cervelo R3 has a factory fitted one, but are they required on a carbon road bike?

It depends on whether you are ok with bit of paint/carbon chipped off your chain stay.

Looks like I'd do well to stick a bit of helicopter tape on it / thanks.
